Clarification

Corporal punishment in schools is prohibited by state law. A story Wednesday about a Roanoke County teacher's aide convicted of assaulting a student inaccurately explained that law. The incident was considered corporal punishment and was not approved by school officials, according to Assistant Roanoke County Attorney Joe Obenshain, who advises the School Board. There are, however, instances when physical contact can be used as discipline, such as when needed to maintain order or safety. These circumstances are not defined as corporal punishment.
