UVA'S FISHER WINS AWARD

Virginia's Mike Fisher has been named one of Soccer America's Collegiate MVPs.

Fisher, who set a career scoring record for the Cavaliers and led the nation with 20 assists in 1996, was selected as a midfielder to an 11-man squad of NCAA Division I players.

The group also included William and Mary forward Waughn Hughes, who played for the Roanoke RiverDawgs of the United System of Independent Soccer Leagues in 1996.

* Virginia will be the host school for the Virginia State Wrestling Meet this weekend in Charlottesville. The eight-team event begins at 6 p.m. today and includes the Cavaliers, Virginia Tech, Longwood, Norfolk State, James Madison, Old Dominion, VMI and defending champion George Mason.
