ALTICE, Harry Thomas, 81, of Boones Mill, died Wednesday, January 15, 1997, at the local hospital. He was a faithful member of the Boones Mill Baptist Church and retired from Continental Homes. Surviving are one sister, Lera Bennett, Elkin, N.C.; nephews, Harold, Edward and Dewey Bennett; five cousins, Joe, Jimmy, and Carl Sink, Frances Law, Julia Wray, all of Franklin County; a special friend, William B. BOWERS, Bessie Fisher, 84, of Rural Retreat, (the Cedar Springs Community), died Wednesday, January 15, 1997, in the Francis Marion Manor in Marion. She was born in Wythe County on November 6, 1912, the daughter of the late Ellis and Mackie Sutherland Fisher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quincy E. Bowers; and a brother, Dale Fisher. She is survived by one son, Rodney Bowers of Rural Retreat; one sister, Maxine Humphreys of Rural Retreat; three brothers, Shaylor Fisher of Monterey, Tenn., Dr. James Fisher of Knoxville, Tenn., Arleigh Steele Fisher of Wytheville; an aunt, Thelma Fisher Phillippi of Rural Retreat; also a friend and caregiver, Dr. John W. BROWN, Agnes Morgan, 96, of Blacksburg, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 1997, at her home. She was a member of Belspring Presbyterian Church, and was a retired teacher for Roanoke County Public Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claire R. Brown Sr. Survivors include two daughters and husband, Martha and Roy Gladwin of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Vivien Brown of Blacksburg; four sons and wives, Ross and Hallie Brown of Blacksburg, Wallace and Mary Ann Brown of Harrisonburg, W. C. and Sandra Brown of Warrenton, and Dennis and Margaret Brown of Mechanicsville; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 19, 1997, at 2 p.m., at Belspring Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Joe McCoy and the Rev. Manson Tate officiating. DENT, Marmaduke Herbert Sr., 84, of Inverness, Fla., died Friday, January 10, 1997, in Inverness. Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 12, 1997, at 3:30 p.m. at Florida Hills Memorial Park in Spring Hill, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Mildred (Mickey) Dent of Inverness; son, Marmaduke Jr. of Singapore; and daughter, Dr. Deedie D. Kagey of Roanoke; grandchildren, Christy L. Kagey of Arlington, Loren N. Dent and Parker A. Dent of Singapore; sister, Lucille Kennedy of Abilene, Texas; niece, Anna Lou Orndorff of Manassas; nephew, William D. Corathers of Weston, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Dent was a 35-year employee of Pan American World Airways in Miami, Fla., where he was a pioneer in the field of metal finishing for the airline industry. He was past president of the American Electroplaters' Society and was instrumental in organizing and conducting several technical airline seminars on electroplating. Mr. Dent was born February 5, 1912 in Roanoke and spent his youth in Weston, W.Va., where he graduated from high school. He attended State College in Glenville, W.Va., and the University of Miami in Miami, Fla. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith.

ELLIOTT, Balsim E., 1, of Virginia Beach, passed away Monday, January 13, 1997. He is survived by his parents, David M. Elliott and Vontichashea Smith, Virginia Beach; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Billy W. Elliott, Roanoke, and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jones, Virginia Beach; a host of aunts and uncles. FLORA, George Alvin, 76, of Boones Mill, went quietly home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 15, 1997. He was born in Franklin County on September 18, 1920 a son of the late Charles Newton and Margie Flora. He was a retired conductor for Norfolk and Southern Railroad with over 38 years of faithful service. Mr. Flora was a lifetime member of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren and was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 37 years, Eloise Rosa Flora. Surviving are his second wife, Annie Marie Flora; one daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Glenn Lynch, Wirtz; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Chris Flora, Stanhope, N.J.; his granddaughter, Erin Lynch, Wirtz; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Polly Flora, Rocky Mount, Bennie and Ruth Flora, Rocky Mount, Bob and Inez Flora, Roanoke; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elene and Curtis Sink, Marlyn and Pat Sink, all of Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 1997 from Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren with Pastor Bruce E. Huffman officiating. FLOYD, Charles Willard, 72, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, January 15, 1997, in the V.A. Medical C enter in Salem. Born February 29, 1924 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Charles and Bessie Southers Floyd, and the stepson of the late Norman Riley Floyd. He was a retired heavy equipment operator with Adams Construction Co., and was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by six children, Tracy Allen Floyd, Allentown, Pa., Tommy Edward Floyd, Everett Collins ``Buzzy'' Cooper, and Roy Ronald Cooper, all of Lexington, Charles Riley Floyd, Blue Ridge, and Tammy Lynn Vess, Goshen; three brothers, Curtis Floyd, Manassas, Norman Floyd Jr., Niles, Ohio, and Hunter Floyd, Lexington; a special friend, Thelma E. Adams, Roanoke; 24 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Flowers officiating. HENDRICKS, Jennie Lou McRae, 88, of Roanoke, formerly of Norfolk, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 1997. LEONARD, Hilton Curtis, 79, of Salem, formerly of Galax, Va. passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997. Mr. Leonard was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frazier Blaine Leonard and Virgie Beatrice Jolly Leonard and wife, Georgene Hampton Leonard. He is survived by children and spouses, Sandra L. and Richard K. Poff, Roger C. and Dot A. Leonard, Joyce L. and Albert N. MAYO, James Linwood, 53, of Washington D.C. formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, January 9, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Willie Mayo. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mayo; two daughters, Jamie Mayo and Joyce Mayo Tindal; two stepchildren, Terry and Ervin; three grandchildren; four sisters; four brothers; two sisters-in-laws; one aunt; two uncles; and a host of neices, nephews and other relatives and friends. MILLS, Robert Lewis, 62, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, January 16, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born on March 10, 1934 in Farmville to the late Lewis Early and Elizabeth Carwile Mills. Mr. Mills was president of Mills, Oliver, and Webb, Inc., and a member of the American Institute of Architecture-Blue Ridge Chapter. He was also a Deacon at Blacksburg Baptist Church, an ardent supporter of the United Way, and was very instrumental in establishing Blacksburg Municipal Park. He is survived by his wife, Billie L. Mills, Blacksburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer L. Mills, Atlanta, Ga., and Janis M. and Matt Harr, Denver, Colo; a son and daughter-in-law, Duane M. and Cathy Mills, Christiansburg; three grandchildren, Savannah and Spencer Mills, both of Christiansburg, and Michael Harr, Denver, Colo.; a brother and sister-in-law, William C. and Anne Mills, Columbia, S.C. NEWELL, Edith Mae Clark, 90, of Lexington, died Wednesday, January 15, 1997, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Newell was born in Rockbridge County on January 27, 1906, a daughter of the late Taylor Clark and Hessie Brads Clark. She was a member of the Collierstown Baptist Church, Lexington, and was the widow of James Samuel Newell. She was preceded in death by a son, J. Lloyd Newell. Survivors include four daughters and one son-in-law, Juanita N. Carter, Roanoke, Phyllis N. Strange, Danville, Roberta N. and Charles Hockman, Lexington, Betty Ann Newell, Lexington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne Lee and Evelyn Newell, Lexington, Malcolm ``Mack'' and Judy Newell, Lexington; one sister, Beulah C. Davis, Lexington; eleven grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Simmons was born in Bath County August 19, 1923, and was the son of the late Harry Tucker Simmons and Grace Mace Simmons. Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife, Mildred Simmons, Glasgow; one stepdaughter, Wanda Overstreet, Roanoke; one stepson, John Nicely, Lexington; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Tickle; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Dean and Brenda Tickle, New Castle; two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and Allen Dixon, Roanoke, Dana Sue Garrett, Roanoke; a stepson, Douglas Allen Williamson, Richmond; a stepdaughter and her husband, Donna Gail and Alan Graybill, Elliston; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev . Larry E. Sprouse officiating. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.
