ADKINS, Charles Lowell, 82, of Buchanan, died Friday, January 17, 1997. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Kate Vaughn Adkins; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Chuck Crall, Virginia Beach, Elain e and Jim Wymer, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Dot Adkins, Roanoke; five grandchildren, Leigh Wymer Beard, Jennifer Wymer, Mike Crall, Meg Crall, Kim Adkins; four great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, John Abe and Alphia Adkins, Elberon; sister-in-law, Mrs. Esther Adkins, Buchanan; brother-in-law, Randolph Millner, Mobile, Ala. BECKNER, Mary M. Martin, 55, of Route 3, Box 322, Pulaski, died Thursday, January 16, 1997, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She was born in Pulaski on June 17, 1941, and was the daughter of the late Barnett and Eula Hughett Martin. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy Martin, Douglas Martin, and Donald Martin. She was a member of the Bob White Boulevard Church of God, Pulaski. Surviving are her husband, Jerry L. Beckner, Pulaski; daughter, Suzanne B. Hollins, Dublin; granddaughter, Courtney S. Hollins, Dublin; sisters and brother-in-law, Betty Arnold, Pulaski, Joyce and Donald Burnette, Pulaski; brother and sister-in-law, Woody and Karen Martin, Roanoke; sisters-in-law and spouses, Brenda and Mickey Viars, Blountville, Tenn., Marty and Shirley Kemp, Allisonia; brother-in-law and spouse, Lewis and Vera Beckner, Christiansburg; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ernest and Florence Beckner, Pulaski. BEEGHLY, Urias B., 81, of Rocky Mount, went to be with the L ord on Thursday, January 16, 1997. Mr. Beeghly was a member of the Woodmen of the World for 36 years, and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Beeghly; four daughters and son-in-laws, Jean and Carter Ellis of Richmond, Ruth and Jerry Gates of Colorado, Nancy and Amos Whitlow of Rocky Mount, and Marty (``Linda"") and Eric Rice of Middletown Md; one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Gay Beeghly of Rocky Mount; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Beeghly of Rocky Mount, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Ebenezer Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Sunday, with Dr. William R. Shively officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, with graveside rights by Woodmen of the World. BLANKENSHIP, R. B. Jr., 66, of Wytheville, died Thursday, January 16, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, R. B. ``Brown'' and Edith Davis Blankenship. He is survived by his wife, Shirley D. Blankenship of Wytheville; daughter and son-in-law, Connie an d Eddie Richardson of Wytheville; son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Bobbi Blankenship of Wytheville; sister, Mary Ann Brown of Radford; brother, Donnie Blankenship of Fairfax; granddaughter, Tasha Nicola Blankenship; stepgrandchildren, Jessica Reffitt, Ricci Reffitt, Carly Robinson, Kate Robinson. CARPER, Robert L., 76, a retired Air Force major and holder of the Air Force Command Pilot rating, who lived in Salisbury, Md., since 1960, died Thursday, January 16, 1997, at his home. Born in Pontiac, Mich., he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Florence Butler Carper. Major Carper enlisted in the Army in 1939 at Salem, Va. In 1942, he graduated from Turner Field, Ga., as a Sergeant Pilot and was assigned to Air Transport Command in Wilmington, Del. He served in North Africa and India during World War II, flying transport aircraft. Returning to the States, he was assigned to SAC, where he flew RB-47 and KC-135 aircraft until retirement in 1960. In Salisbury, he worked as manager and pilot for the fixed base operation. He then worked for State Farm Insurance Company as an agent until retirement in 1985. His wife, Lucy Clark Carper, died in 1988. He is survived by two sons, Robert L. Carper III of Durham, N.C., and Michael R. Carper of Lancaster, Pa.; a sister, Mildred Schaaf of Califon, N.J.; a brother, Charles Carper of Colonial Heights, Va., and five grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bounds Funeral Home, East Main Street, Salisbury, Md., where friends may call one hour prior to the funeral. The Rev. John Mitchell will officiate. CHILDRESS, David M., 70, of Bent Mountain, passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997, in a Salem hospital. He is survived by his wife, Ocie Collins Childress of Bent Mountain; two sons, Thomas Childress and David Childress of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three daughters, Mary Tilley of Winston-Salem, Debbie Jones of Kernersville, N.C., and Patricia Speaks of Pfafftown, N.C.; tw o stepsons, Douglas Childress and Richard Linville of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mary M. DENNIS, Dr. Bill L. Jr., B.A.D.C., of Roanoke and Wooster, Ohio, passed away Friday, December 20, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Sherrie Dennis; his parents, Bill L. Dennis Sr. and Faye A. Dennis; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert J. (Bob) and Becky Dennis; two beloved nieces, Courtney and Renee Dennis; and two beloved nephews, Matthew and Mark Dennis, all of Roanoke. DILLARD, Jasper C., (""Bud"") 97, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 17, 1997 at the Salem Health and Rehabilitation Nursing Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie C. Dillard. Mr. Dillard was a member of the Vinton Baptist Church. Surviving are his daughters, Virginia D. Whitmire, Roanoke Co. and Lucille D. HODGE, Wanda Hartwell, 84, of Salem, passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997. She was born in Summers County, W.Va., and was a Salem resident for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Hodge. HOLST, Mary K. Davis, passed away Wednesday, January 15, 1997, in Hightstown, N.J. She was a graduate of the University of Richmond and studied in Germany as a Fulbright Scholar. She worked for many years in Europe, South America and the United States as a systems analyst. Most recently she was Senior Vice President of Comucomp International. She was predeceased by her father, William H. Davis. She is survived by her husband, Willem Holst; her mother, Carmie F. Davis; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth D. and Bobby L. Clark; a niece and nephew, Melissa E. and Robert D. Clark. A memorial service was held on Thursday, January 16, 1997, in Hightstown, N.J

HOWARD, Granville Martin, (``Marty''), 61, of Radford, died Friday, January 17, 1997, in a Salem hospital. He was the 12th child of McCoy and Lillie B. Howard. He was a retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry Company, with 32 years service. He was a member and elder of the Radford Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Sowers Howard, Radford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory Martin and Sandra Cox Howard, Anthony (Tony) Scott and Pamela Harmon Howard, all of Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane Howard and Brian Stanley, Radford; a sister, Dixie H. MAHONEY, Cecil Guy, 78, of Lexington, died Thursday, January 16, 1997, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Mr. Mahoney was born on July 28, 1918, in Anderson, S.C., a son of the late Eddie Frank Mahoney and Aquilla Compton Mahoney. He was a retired florist of 35 years in Lexington, and was a long-standing member of Lexington Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder until his declining health. He also served in World War II in England with the 155th General Hospital. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Mahoney Irvine. He is survived by his wife, Sarah (``Lovey"") Cook Mahoney of Lexington; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan Mahoney and Robert Moore Alexander of Seaford; a sister, Frances Mahoney Chittum of Richmond; a brother and sister-in-law, John H. and Dorothy Mahoney of Martinsville; a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Alexander, and a grandson, Robert Moore Alexander II, both of Seaford, and a number of nieces and nephews. MAYO, James Lenard, 53, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Roanoke, Va., died Thursday, January 9, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Willie Mayo, and a brother, Archie B. Mayo. MORGAN, Helen Adamson, 78, of Lexington, died Thursday, January 16, 1997 in a local nursing home. A daughter of the late Lafayette and Mary Johnson Adamson, she was born January 9, 1919 in Charleston, W. Va. The family moved to Lexington where she attended the public school. She continued her education at the Apex School of Beauty Culture in Richmond. Mrs. Morgan was a self-employed Cosmetologist in Lexington before becoming a teacher aide in the local school system. She became a member of the Randolph Street United Methodist Church where she was active in the Usher Board and the Florence Wheeler Circle. Her other affiliations include Charter Member of the Hearts Club and the Helping Hand Club. Mrs. Morgan was the widow of the late Edward Bowyer and the late Harry T. Morgan. She was predeceased by two brothers, Earnest and Roy Adamson. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Ann M. and Frank Lindsey, Vineland, N.J.; two grandsons, Michael Lindsey, Millville, N.J. and Marc Lindsey, Esq., Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Norvin and Norman Adamson, Bridgeton, N.J. and Lafayette Adamson, Jr., Lexington; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Henderson, Lexington, and Mrs. Pearline Davis, Atlanta, Ga.; one granddaughter-in-law; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. RADER, Lorena Virginia, 87, of Roanoke, formerly of Troutville, went to be with the Lord Thursday, January 16, 1997. She was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rosa Rader, Troutville. She is survived by one sister, Gertrude (Trudy) Scott, Roanoke; a special friend, Rowena Dillenger, Richmond; and several nieces and nephews. REED, James R., 55, of Cedar Grove, W.Va., died Thursday, January 16, 1997, at C.A.M.C. General Division, Charleston, W.Va., after a short illness. He was a native of Copperston, W.Va., in Wyoming County. He was a disabled coal miner, having worked for Allied Chemical Co. He was an Army Veteran, a Protestant, and a member of the V.F.W., and the Moose Lodge #2346 of Smith Mountain Lake, Va. ROBINSON, Zollie, 77, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, January 15, 1997, at his residence. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 18, at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Elder Clarence Bowersocks, Pastor Denny Clark, Pastor Mike Vest, and Pastor Rocky Dalton, with burial in Sunset Cemetery. SIMPKINS, Dorothy Marie, 69, of Ripplemead, died Thursday, January 16, 1997 in Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem. B orn in Giles County, she was a daughter of the late Snow and Mary Howell Hopkins. She was the wife of the late Elmer Louis Simpkins. Surviving are five sons, James D. Simpkins, Narrows, William B. Simpkins, Dublin, Roger Dale Simpkins, Eggleston, Jeffrey Wayne Simpkins, Barren Springs, and David Allen Simpkins, Craigsville; three daughters, Wanda Sue Justice, Jenkins, Ky., Brenda Faye Carson, Blacksburg, and Donna Kay Lindberg, Antioch, Ill.; three brothers, Herbert (Buddy) Hopkins, Roanoke, Leo Hopkins, Roanoke, and Henry Hopkins, Springdale; two sisters, Stella Wright, Blacksburg, and Ruby Clear, Youngstown, Fla.; sixteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 20, 1997 in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

SMITH, Emily Rucker, 88, of Salem, died Friday, January 17, 1997. A native of Lynchburg and she had worked many years as a Registered Nurse and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Salem. Survivors include her husband, Dexter N. Smith; five nieces and 1 nephew. A funeral Eucharist Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 20, 1997 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, with the Dr. W. Melvin Maxey and the Rev. Harman Smith officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Lynchburg. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the John M. UMBERGER, Dorothy Miller Dalton, 72, of Route #1, Barren Springs, passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997, at her home. She was born December 24, 1924 in Middleboro, Ky. She was the daughter of the late Curt Miller and Clemen Miller. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elias Dalton and Malcolm Umberger. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret (Chick) Quesenberry, Barren Springs, Sharon and Russell Orange, Forest; son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Kathryn Dalton, Indian Valley; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Dennis Wayne Dickson officiating. Interment will follow in the Shockley Family Cemetery, Route #100, Hillsville. Visiting will be any time Saturday after 3 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, is handling the arrangements.

VIA, Wiley Alexander, 59, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 16, 1997. Mr. Via was a professional engineer with Reynolds Metals for 31 years. He is survived by his wife, Peggy C. Via; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanine V. and Robert Parks; sisters, Marie Shepherd and Doris Donahue; brother, Ray R. Via, and granddaughter, Paige Alexandra Parks. His remains rest at Morrissett Fune ral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Route 10), Richmond, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Interment will be in Dale Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
