FLEMING GIRLS FALL INTO TRAP VS. KNIGHTS

Cave Spring used a trapping defense to force numerous turnovers in a decisive second quarter that carried the Knights to a 66-52 victory over William Fleming on Friday night in a Roanoke Valley District girls' game at the Colonels' gym.

Cave Spring (11-1 overall, 3-1 district) outscored Fleming 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead to the locker room. Alyssa Redick led the Knights with 20 points and her sister Catie added 11.

Shaunarey Walker scored 20 points and Kiann Trent added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Colonels (8-4, 2-1).

In other girls' games Friday:

Roanoke Valley Christian 62, Roanoke Catholic 20: Rebecca Bryant scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Eagles past the Celtics in a Blue Ridge Conference game at Roanoke Catholic.

Roanoke Valley Christian (14-4, 6-1) shot 62 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Celtics 25-10. Gina Guthrie added 15 points.

Christy Hinman led the Celtics (2-11, 1-6) with 10 points, three rebounds and three steals.

North Cross 42, Lynchburg Christian 37: Ann Ballenger scored 19 points to lead the Raiders (4-4, 4-2) to a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Bulldogs (3-8, 2-5) in Lynchburg.

Michele Hamilton added 15 points and eight rebounds and Hunter Stull contributed eight rebounds and two points for the Raiders.

Alyssa Carr led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

Boys

Roanoke Valley Christian 62, Roanoke Catholic 60: Dan Bivens' two free throws with 1:36 remaining gave the Eagles the lead for the first time, and Roanoke Valley Christian held off its Virginia Independent Conference foe at Roanoke Catholic.

The Celtics (4-9, 3-2) led for most of the game, holding a 13-8 lead through the first quarter and a 25-21 margin at the half. But they couldn't hold on down the stretch against the second-ranked team in the Virginia Independent Schools' Division II poll.

Brad Hutchins scored 17 points for the Eagles (11-4, 7-2), Bivens added 15 and Mark DeLong and Justin Hurt chipped in 11 apiece.

Terron Reed, Timesland's leading rebounder, had 13 boards and 17 points for Roanoke Catholic. Chad Wall added 14 points, Brendan McCarthy 13 and Aki Al-Zubaidi 11.

William Byrd 68, Alleghany 64: Kevin Stump scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Terriers past the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District contest on William Byrd's floor.

Jason Bailey added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Terriers (8-4, 5-1).

Travis Davis and Ramey Pendleton led the Mountaineers (3-8, 1-5) with 19 and 15 points, respectively.

Lynchburg Christian 49, North Cross 41: Herman Garnett scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs past the Raiders in a Virginia Independent Conference game in Lynchburg.

Lynchburg Christian (6-7, 5-4) outscored North Cross 15-4 in the third quarter to take control.

Brandon LaCroix scored 16 points to lead the Raiders (3-6, 2-4).
