Winston-Salem celebrates Czech roots

More than 200 artifacts and artworks from the National Museum in Prague are on view at the Gallery at Old Salem in Winston-Salem, N.C. ``A Thousand Years of Czech Culture'' traces the history and cultural achievements of the Czech lands. The exhibition, which inaugurates a $3 million gallery space, will be on view through March 16.

It is the product of a four-year alliance between the National Museum of Prague and Old Salem, a living-history museum where costumed interpreters recreate late 18th- and early 19th-century life in the church town and trading center of Salem, N.C. The town was founded in 1766 by the Moravians, a religious group with roots in Bohemia and Moravia, two regions of the Czech Republic.

The Gallery at Old Salem, at 924 South Main St., is open daily. Self-guided tours (at least an hour is recommended) begin every 15 minutes; each ticket is marked with a specific date and entry time. Admission is $7; $4 for ages 6 to 16. Tickets can be bought in advance, for a service charge, at (910) 722-6400. Information: (910) 721-7300.

Tax expires; flyers still paying

The 10 percent ticket tax on domestic air fares expired Jan. 1, but travelers are not seeing the savings. Airlines have decided to pocket them. The ticket tax, which finances the nation's air traffic control system, lapsed last January and was reinstated on Aug. 27 through the end of 1996. Congress has not passed legislation to collect the tax this year, but it is expected to do so.

When in force, the tax is largely invisible to consumers because it is embedded in fares quoted by airlines and travel agents. By not lowering prices, airlines hope to bolster earnings without chasing away potential passengers because of higher fares.
