BANDY, Clyde Linden, SFC, U.S. Army (Ret.), 66, of Savannah, Ga., died Saturday, January 18, 1997, at his residence after a long illness. He was born in Tazewell County, Va., and was retired from the U.S. Army with 24 years of service, which included Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of the Korean American United Methodist Church of Savannah. Surviving are his wife, Yong Suk Bandy of Savannah; his mother, Mrs. Minnie C. Bandy of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Cynthia Butterworth of Vinton, Va., and Mrs. Sadie Hagy of High Point, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home in Savannah. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, with interment following in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

BROWN, Dorothy Farmer, 79, of Salem, passed away Friday, January 17, 1997. She was a Salem resident for the past 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh B. Brown Jr., She was a member of the Salem Lioness Club and attended Edgewood Christian Church. Ms. Brown was a graduate of the Lewis Gale School of Nursing and a former Director of Nursing at Pulaski County Hospital. She is survived by her sister, Inez Farmer St. Clair of Salem; and Madeline (Bunny) Micov of Dublin; she is also survived by nieces, Ann St. Clair, Sargent and Carol St.Clair Davis of Salem; Nancy Micov Norris of Oriental N.C.; and Agnes Micov Lilly of Chesterfield, Va. Funeral services will be conducted from the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel, Monday, January 20, 1997 at 11 a.m. with Larry Atkin officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Dublin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice. DAVIS, Arthur D., 71, of Avon Park, Fla. died Friday, January 17, 1997 at his residence. He was a native of Callaway, Va., having lived there for 22 years. He moved to Florida in 1962 and retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service in 1966 becoming a Correctional Officer for the State of Florida and retired from A.P.C.I. after 20 years of service in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion Post #69, Avon Park; V.F.W. Post #9853, Avon Park; Arcadia Lodge #66, F & A.M., Arcadia, Fla. He is survived by his mother, Cora L. Branecky, Roanoke; two sons, Arthur D. Davis Jr., Rocky Mount, John L. Davis, Avon Park, Fla.; two daughters, Audrey J. Cloud, Avon Park and Angela D. White, Avon Park; brother, Troy D. Davis, Spain; two grandchildren. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, January 20, 1997 at the Fountain Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Roberts officiating. DEAN, William Ashley, of Belleair Bluff, Fla., went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 5, 1997 at the age of 75. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Smith Dean; sons, Billy Allen Dean, Dale Robinson Dean, Belleair Bluff; daughter, Willena Sue Dean DeLong, Roanoke; two brothers in Florida, one brother in Tennessee; five grandchildren. Bill and Charlotte raised their family in Roanoke and moved to Florida twenty five years ago where they later retired. We will miss our loving husband, father, brother, and hold his memory in our hearts until we see him again with our Lord Jesus.

FRANKLIN, Henry Elmer, 95, of Radford, passed away Friday, January 17, 1997, at Heritage Hall Health Care Cen ter. He was a retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry and a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Radford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie M. Franklin. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elsie F. Elliott of Waleska, Ga., and Mrs. Martha F. Scott of Kernersville, N.C.; seven brothers, Tom, Virgil, Jeff, Mutt and Quinton Franklin of Radford, and Coy and Van Franklin of Dublin; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 20, 1997, at 11 a.m., at First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Radford, with Pastor Cecil Albano officiating. Interment will follow in Pentecostal Conference Cemetery at Dublin. HALL, Ira Cline, 79, of Troutville, died Friday, January 17, 1997. He was a member of the VFW Post #1841 and is survived by one son, Danny L. Hall, Salem; three daughters, Wanda Booher, Salem, Dreama H. Tompkins, Reidsville, N.C., Kathy H. Clemons, Roanoke; two sisters, Helen Bishop, Cloverdale, Flora Gusler, Roanoke; fourteen grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Rader Daleville Chapel with the Rev. Elmer Clemons officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. HARRIS, Edmonia Fuqua, 90, of Montvale, passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997. She was born in Bedford County to the late James Anthony and Mattie Holland Fuqua. She attended the public schools of Bedford County. She was a faithful and dedicated member of the Full Gospel Holiness Church, Montvale. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Brooks Harris and one son, James E. Harris Sr. Those left to cherish her memories are one son, Elder Samuel A. (Estell) Wade, Roanoke; three daughters, Iona Williams, Missouri (Lee) Saunders both of Montvale and Kitty Wright of Washington D.C.; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Peery will officiate with the interment in the Montvale Cemetery. HICKMAN, Gordon Spencer, 86, of Lexington, died Saturday, January 18, 1997, at Shenandoah Valley Health Care Facility. Born on July 30, 1910, in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late John William Hi ckman and Rosanna Sorrells Hickman. Mr. Hickman was a retired concrete finisher and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Rachel M. Hickman of Lexington; three daughters, Alice H. Garrett, Peggy H. Carter and Sandra H. Hatcher of Lexington; three sons, Ted D. Hickman and Ray N. Hickman of Lexington and Larry A. Hickman of Buena Vista; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, January 20, 1997, from Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer A.R.P. Church Cemetery. HIGGINBOTHAM, Demah Jacob, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 18, 1997 at Lewis Gale Hospital. He is the son of the late Wilhelmina W. and Demah Jacob Higginbotham Sr. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on January 26, 1914. Mr. Higginbotham, known as D.J., was a charter member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was the founder and Board Chairman of Corrugated Container Corporation. He was a member of Cave Spring Masonic Lodge No. 230, Kazim Temple and was co-founder of the Kazim Fire Brigade. He was a past member of the Kazim Klown Unit, Big Lick Kiwanis, Gideons International, and the Salem Craig County Camp. Mr. Higginbotham is survived by his wife, Harriett R. Higginbotham of fifty-seven years; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald A. and Ella P. Higginbotham, David D. and Rita W. Higginbotham, Paul R. and Martha B. Higginbotham, Gerald J. and Doris P. Higginbotham, John H. and Shelly S. Higginbotham; sisters, Virginia Watkins, Omaha, Neb., and Jessee Chittenden, Ottumwa, Iowa. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Melissa Higginbotha m, Heather Higginbotham, Sarah Higginbotham, Ann Higginbotham, Elizabeth Higginbotham, Jacob Higginbotham, Joseph Higginbotham, Lindsay Higginbotham, Luke Higginbotham, and Rachel Higginbotham. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 4608 Brambleton Ave., S.W. with the Rev. Mark A. Graham officiating. HYLTON, James Ace, 80, of Meadows of Dan, passed away Saturday, January 18, 1997, in a Galax hospital. Survivors include his brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Belle Hylton, and Walker and Peggy Hylton of Meadows of Dan and Doris Hylton of Willis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Ray Mabery of Willis, Ethel an d Edd Hooper of Ridgeway, Beulah and Cecil Spencer of Fieldale, Eveleen Keith of Meadows of Dan and Annie Pack of Collinsville; a sister-in-law, Helen Hylton of Willis, and four special nieces, Becky Hylton, Judy Stanley, Bonnie Roten and Rena McAlexander. INGLES, Frances McCalla, 83, of Radford, passed away Saturday, January 18, 1997 at Wheatland Hills Retirement Center. She was born in Sugar Creek, N.C. on June 12, 1913 the daughter of the late Rev. Walter R. and Frances Alexander McCalla. She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Andrew Lewis Ingles; and a son, William McCalla Ingles. She was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church of Radford and served as both an Elder and a Deacon. Mrs. Ingles served on the Radford City School Board for a number of years and was an active member of the Radford Community Hosptial Auxillary. She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College, and received a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia. She attended Tulane University School of Medicine. She taught at both Agnes Scott College and at Radford College. Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Mary Ingles and Michael Barbour of Dublin; one son and wife, Andrew L. and Brenda Ingles Jr. of Alpharetta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Micah Barbour and Becky and Beth Ingles. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, January 20, 1997 at the Presbyterian Church of Radford with the Rev. Wendell Manuel officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Radford. JOHNSON, Helen Smith, 97, of Roanoke, went to be with her Lord Friday, January 17, 1997. She was a long time member of Belmont United Methodist Church. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Douglas Johnson; her parents, Darian and Susie Merriman Smith; her four brothers, Mack, Orin, Jim, and Russell Smith; and her four sisters, Maye Newcomb, Eva, Irene and Pauline Smith. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Howard Edwards, Roanoke; grandson and his wife, Barry and Eileen Edwards, Elliston; granddaughter, Donna Edwards Darnell, Roanoke; two great-granddaughters, Dana Edwards and Ashleigh Darnell both of Roanoke; brother and his wife, Paul and Clara Smith, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Nellie Smith, Roanoke, Gillie Smith, Boones Mill; numerous nieces and nephews including a devoted niece, Joanne Pembelton, Stevensville; a beloved friend, Thomas Darnell, Troutville; and many other friends of Roanoke and Henry Co. KESSINGER, Lottie Scott, 86, of Newport, died Saturday, January 18, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born December 31, 1910, in Spruce Run to the late Charlie and Audry Kirk Scott. She was a member of Newport Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Howard Kessinger. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil H. and Lula W. Kessinger of Newport; one daughter and son-in-law, Cleo K. and James Trott of New Castle; five grandchildren; two sisters, Nellie Mae Long or Newport and Georgia S. DeVusser of Radford, and one brother, Harold Scott of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 20, 1997, at 1 p.m., at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. James Belcher officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. KING, Eldred Floyd, 72, of Christiansburg, died Friday, January17, 1997 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was a retired steel worker and is survived by his wife, Thelma King; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Linda King, Baltimore, Md.; a grandson, Barton Jakeob King, Baltimore; a daughter, Barbara King; and a sister, Jane Pannell, Christiansburg. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday from the Richardson-Horne Chapel conducted by the Rev. Richard H. Horne. Private interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. LOGAN, Ellen Morrison, 86, of Roanoke, passed away in a Salem ReHab Center on Friday, January 17, 1997. She was the widow of Willie N. Logan. She was a member of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Deaconess Board. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Andrea Logan; one daughter and son-on-law, Christine and John Powell, all of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Emory Alexander; one brother and sister-in-law, W. MEADOWS, Katherine Blankenship, 74, of 406 Locust Street, Narrows, died Friday, January 17, 1997 at her residence. A life long resident of Giles County, she was born on October 17, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Gilbert Houston and Gladys Helen Stebar Blankenship. She was a member of the Woodland Street Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald E. Blankenship, William H. Blankenship and Gilbert H. Blankenship, Jr. and a sister, Donetta Jean Henson. She is survived by her husband, Gilbert J. Meadows, Narrows; a son Robert Meadows of Narrows; two brothers, Gary Blankenship, Baltimore, Md; and Billy E. Blankenship, Pulaski, Va; four sisters, Sylvia Lilly, Peterstown, WV; Helen Greenleaf, and Viola Hanes, both of Pearisburg, Va; Madeline Gautier, Narrows; two grandsons, Robert L. OTTAWAY, James Edward Sr., 86, of Fincastle, passed away Saturday, January 18, 1997 at his home formerly from Sherrill, N.Y. he was an Alumni of Sherrill High School Dean Academy in Franklin Mass. He was a graduate of VPI Class of1935 on a full football scholarship. Jim was a World War II Veteran he served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre and was Lt. Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Ottaway was President of Checker Cab and Avis Rent A-Car for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Edna J. (Jodie), sons and wives, James E. (Jimmie) Jr. and Glenda of Clarksville, Va; C. P. Tom and Nancy of Charlotte N.C.; G. A. (Greg) of Lawrenceville, Ga; Jeffrey (Jeff) and Martha of Roanoke; John Lindsay Thomas and Ann of Richmond, Jo Thomas Haas and Stewart of Douglasville, Ga; seven grandchildren, four great-grand children, one sister, Helen O. QUILLEN, Eunice Virginia P., of 212 Dora Highway, Pulaski, died Friday morning, January 17, 1997 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Smyth County (Seven Mile Ford) on January 17, 1906, and was the da ughter of the late Robert Andy Phipps and Lillie Mae Reedy Phipps. She was a retired nurse at Fork Union in Baltimore, Md. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dwight S. Quillen and by one son, Robert McCready. She was Presbyterian by faith. Surviving are one stepdaughter, Mrs. Ruth Thomas, Marion; one sister, Mrs. Stella Ryburn, Macon, Ga.; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. SPENCE, James Milton, 74, of Floyd, passed away Saturday, January 18, 1997, in a Salem hospital. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Spence of Germany; his mother, Tillie Spence of Willis; two brothers, Allen Spence of Willis and Trenton Spence of Claudeville, and three sisters, Belva George of Galax, Corinna Dougill of Fancy Gap and Nelderee Reynolds of Floyd. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Cemetery in Willis. STEWARD, Michael W., 37, of Macon, Ga., died Thursday, January 16, 1997. A native of Wichita, Kan., he was a Virginia Peninsula resident from 1966 to 1987. Mr. Steward worked as a regio nal manager with Combined Insurance Company in Atlanta, Ga. He was a member of Denbigh Boulevard Church of Christ. He was a 1977 graduate of Menchville High School and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Tennessee in 1983. Survivors include his wife, Janet Elaine Steward; his parents, Jerry W. and Joyce M. Steward of Newport News, Va., and two sisters, Lou Ann S. Almond of Lynchburg, Va., and Deborah Marie S. Robertson of Gloucester, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Denbigh Boulevard Church of Christ by Charles Tucker Jr. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of Macon.

TAYLOR, Dorothy Warner, 79, of Roanoke, died Saturday, January 18, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil John Taylor. Surviving include her two sisters, Evelyn Warner Stiff and Annie Warner Tucker; brother, Jesse Carl Warner Jr. and his wife, Luria H. Warner; several nieces and nephews; special nephews and nieces, Eddy A. and Peggy G. Murray, William W. Kopcial, Leslie B. Tucker, Roger E. Warner. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, January 20, 1997 in Fairview Cemetery with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. TERRY, Lolene Ingram, 78, of Ferrum, died Saturday, January 18, 1997. Mrs. Terry was a daughter of the late Samuel and Susie Prillaman Ingram and was also preceded in death by her husband, John Terry and one brother, Ervin Ingram. Mrs. Terry was retired from E.I. Dupont with 35 years of service. Survivin g are one daughter, Pat Carter of Henry; one granddaughter and her husband, Lisa and Mike McCaul of Siler City, N.C.; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Frank Adams of Ferrum; three stepsons; and three nieces. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, January 20, 1997 from the Lynch Funeral Chapel with the Rev. M.G. Goodpasture officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ferrum. VIA, Betty Maxine, 70, of Sanford, Fla., claimed her eternal victory on Thursday, December 26, 1996. Betty was originally from Roanoke but moved to Florida over 30 years ago, where she and her husband owned and operated Via Ceramics. She loved the Blue Ridge mountains. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a one-time employee of Fink's Jewelers. Betty was the daughter of Oscar Bennington Via and Mabel Richeson Via of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Alley Via. Also preceding her in death were five siblings, Nina Yvonne Via, Randolph and Rudolph Via, Edsel Eugene and Guy Carlton Via, all of Roanoke. Surviving family includes two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Carr Via and Elizabeth Long Via, both of Roanoke; special niece and nephews, Lynn and Mary Via, Richard and Joan Via, Gayle and Kenneth Patterson, Gary and Nancy Via, and Michael Via, all of Roanoke; four great-nieces; and five great-nephews of Roanoke; one great-great-niece, Pennsylvania. Betty never had children but had a special way of making her niece and nephews feel like they were one of her own. She taught us to fish and play pinochle (and how to know when Uncle Jim was cheating!). She taught us to laugh at ourselves and we cherish the memories we have of her. We will never forget. Rest in Peace, Betty. We love you.
