CELEBRATIONS - WEDDINGS

Alley-Penick

Mary Beth Penick and John Patrick Alley were married on January 18, 1997 in Jessie Ball DuPont Chapel, Hollins College. The Chaplain of the college, Jan Fuller Carruthers, officiated the ceremony. The reception was held in the Crystal Ballroom of The Hotel Roanoke.

The maid of honor was Carrie Ames. The matron of honor was Sydney Garber. Bridesmaids were Amy Alley, sister of the groom; Tammy Tiltman, Dee Goodbody, Danielle Brown and Leigh Kelly. The junior bridesmaid was Jacklyn Thomas, cousin of the bride.

The best man was J. Wayne Alley, father of the groom. The ushers were Byron Penick, brother of the bride; Scott Barber, Kent Wise, Mike Green, Joe Ervin and Chris Versen.

The guestbook was attended by Tristina Joe.

The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Vickie Thrasher of Vinton and Charles Wayne Penick of Annapolis, MD. She is a graduate of William Byrd High School in Vinton and Hollins College in Roanoke. She is employed by Crestar Bank.

The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wayne Alley of Harrisonburg. He is a graduate of Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. He is employed by Capitol One.

The newlyweds will live in Richmond after the wedding trip to St. Lucia.

Coplen-McMillan

Judith Irene McMillan and Matthew Edward Coplen were united in marriage Saturday, December 14, 1996, at Caldwell Chapel, Louisville, Kentucky. The five o'clock ceremony was officiated by Dr. Patricia Tull Willey, professor of Old Testament, and the Rev. Richard Hill, campus minister at James Madison University.

The bride is the daughter of Tom and Linda McMillan of Radford. She is a graduate of Radford High School and James Madison University.

The groom is the son of Ed and Jane Coplen of Hereford, Texas. He is a graduate of Hereford High School and Texas A&M University.

Maid of honor was Carla McMillan, sister of the bride of Fairfax, Virginia. Bridesmaids were Teri Woodington of College Station, Texas, and Carrie Burslem of Richmond, Virginia, both friends of the bride; and Karen Coplen, sister of the groom of San Antonio, Texas.

Best man was Greg Coplen, brother of the groom of San Antonio, Texas. Groomsmen were Matt Keenan of Memphis, Tennessee, M ike Eickhoff of Louisville, Kentucky, and Kyle Walker of Louisville, Kentucky, friends of the groom.

The wedding music was provided by H. Jeff Hammack of Martinsville, Virginia.

After a honeymoon trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, the couple will reside in Louisville, Kentucky, where they are seminary students at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Craighead-Baumgartner

In the spirit of Christian Joy & Love, Mandy M. Baumgartner and Denny E. Craighead were united in marriage on Saturday, December 28, 1996 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Baptist Church in Bedford with the Reverend Wessley Patterson officiating.

The Bride is the daughter of Sharon W. Rose of Bedford and John E. Baumgartner of Roanoke and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Baumgartner of Blue Ridge and Mr. and Mrs. Billy L. Witt, Sr. of Bedford and the late Shelby B. Witt. The Groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Nunn of Montvale and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Biggs of Montvale.

Esc orted by her father and given in marriage by her parents and family, the bride wore an off the shoulder white satin gown with a pearl beaded and sequined fitted bodice and pleated sleeves. The pearl and sequined bows and streamers extended to the cathedral length train which was adorned with a pearl and lace trim. Her veil was made of white satin and adorned with pearls and white sweetheart roses. She carried a cascade bouquet of white roses, stephanotis, lilies, monte casinos, statice, ivy and baby's breath.

Nancy Nottingham served as Matron of Honor. Bridesmaids were Jennifer Rose, Jennifer Biggs, Sarah Hatter and Karen Collier. Flower girls were Kaitlyn Nottingham and Melissa Ripley.

Vernon Nunn of Montvale served as best man. Groomsmen were Michael Nunn, Joshua Baumgartner and Shawn Witt. Ring Bearers were Christian Rose and Caleb Nottingham.

Both are graduates of Liberty High School. The Bride is currently employed at Revco Drug Store and the Groom is serving in the United States Army. The couple will reside in Kansas.

Dove-Hairston

Marsha Jean Hairston and Jacob Dove, Jr., of Roanoke, Virginia, were married at 1:00 p.m., January 11, at the Davis Memorial Chapel at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Rev. Francis Rivers officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Bessie Hairston and the late Marshall Hairston of Winston-Salem, N.C. She received a bachelor's degree from Hampton University in Hampton, VA and a master's degree from the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill.

The groom is the son of the late Jacob Dove, Sr. and the late Missouri Dove of Havelock, N.C. He received a master's from East Carolina University. He is employed as a Regional Human Resources Manager for the First Citizens BancShares in Roanoke, VA.

The new Mrs. Dove was escorted by her mother. Robyn Scott of Kernersville, N.C. was the matron of honor. Jeffery Heyward of Albuquerqu e, New Mexico, was the best man.

The couple's nieces and nephews were ushers. They are Michael and Vonda Johnson of New York, New York; Darius and Crystal Fowler of Lexington, N.C.; and Sykller Melton of High Point, N.C. Carina Hairston was the flower girl. Kim Nesbitt and Natalie Tucker were hostesses. The wedding was directed by Elaine Little.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art. Donald Hairston, the bride's brother, hosted a rehearsal dinner January 10 at his home.

The couple will live in Roanoke, Virginia.

Howard-Bashlor

Ann M. Bashlor and Robert L. Howard were married on January 3, 1997 in The Wedding Chapel. She is t he daughter of L.D. and Audrey Bashlor of Roanoke. A graduate of Virginia Tech and VWCC School of Nursing, Ann is employed by Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He is the son of Paul and Margaret Howard of Christiansburg. A graduate of Radford University and UNC at Chapel Hill, Robert is employed by The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The newlyweds reside in Roanoke.

McCoy-Pugh

Sherry Margaret Pugh and Hensel Brian McCoy were united in marriage on December 7, 1996, at First Wesleyan Church in Roanoke. Dr. Dale D. Holloway officiated. A reception followed in the church fellowship hall.

The bride is the daughter of Ronald and Sue Pugh of Roanoke. She attended Northside High School and is employed at Hair Trends, Inc.

The groom is the son of Hensel and Audna McCoy of Roanoke. He attended Staunton River High School and is employed at Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Roanoke.

Shannon Lyle, sister of the bride, was the matron of honor. Tricia Pugh, cousin of the bride, was the bridesmaid

The best man was Derik Barr, nephew of the groom. Groomsman was Chris Boone, friend of the groom. Ushers included Darren Eubank, Hunter Graham, and David Kingery, friends of the groom. Darren and Hunter also served as candlelighters for the evening ceremony.

Aimee Parsons, friend of the bride, attended the guestbook.

Music was provided by Mrs. Sharon Knight and Miss Marie Duffy. Miss Deanna Morgan was the soloist.

The bride wore an ivory satin gown with a modified sweetheart neckline accented by Alencon lace, enhanced with pearls. The cap shoulder long sleeves were also trimmed with lace and pearls. The bodice extended into a full skirt edged with Alencon lace. She carried a bouquet consisting of a stargazer lily surrounded by cream roses, miniature wine lace carnations, buds of heather, white fujii and magnolia leaves.

Special thanks to Mrs. Peggy Overstreet, our wedding director, to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burger for coordinating the reception, and to Mae Heath for the beautiful wedding cake. Much love to our parents for their love and support and for making our wedding day very special.

A spring honeymoon is planned for Orlando, Fla.

Overstreet-Sweet

Kimberly Dawn Sweet and Travis Wade Overstreet were united in marriage Saturday, November 30, 1996 at Bonsack Baptist Church. The 5 o'clock candlelight ceremony was officiated by Rev. Jim George and Rev. Terry Overstreet, brother of the groom. The bride was escorted to the alter by her father and given in marriage by her parents. Reception followed in the church fellowship hall.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Sweet of Buchanan, Virginia. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Williamson of Fincastle, Virginia and the late Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Sweet. She is a graduate of James River High School and attended Virginia Western Community College and a graduate of National Business College with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Management. She is employed at Goody's Family Clothing as Assistant Merchandising Manager.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood Overstreet of Bedford, Virginia. He is the grandson of Mrs. Christine Smith, and the late James Smith. Also the late Mr. and Mrs. Warren Overstreet. He is a graduate of Liberty High School and is employed by Winn-Dixie as Assistant Store Manager.

The matron of honor was Sherry Bilbro, sister of the bride, Buchanan, VA. Bridesmaids were Tonda Bowers, cousin of the bride, Forest, VA; Lisa Bowman, friend of the bride, Roanoke, VA; Stephanie Johnson, friend of the bride and groom, Bedford, VA; Tamara King, friend of the bride, Moneta, VA; and Shannon Reiger, friend of the bride, Lynchburg, VA.

Best man was Jamey Crawford, friend of the groom, Bedford, VA. Groomsmen were Jeremy Johnson, friend of the groom, Bedford, VA; Timmy Overstreet, brother of the groom, Bedford, VA; Todd Overstreet, brother of the groom, Leesburg, VA; Chris Sweet, cousin of the bride, Roanoke, VA; and Barry Williamson, uncle of the bride, Buchanan, VA.

Flowergirls were Rebekah Acosta, Greenville, S.C. and Meghan Caudle, Leesburg, VA, both nieces of the groom.

Ringbearers were Jonathon Acosta, Greenville, S.C. and Josh Caudle, Leesburg, VA, both nephews of the groom.

Soloists were Kara Gibson and David Eades of Altavista, VA and Danny Horsely of Roanoke, VA.

Guestbook attendants were Elizabeth Sweet, cousin of the bride, Roanoke, VA and Crista Overstreet, niece of the groom, Leesburg, VA.

Organist was Cindy Holland, Buchanan, VA.

Kim and Travis wish to thank Marilyn Williamson for directing the wedding and for the beautiful wedding cake. Mark Clark and Danny Horsely for the time and effort that was put into the decorating. Gary and Linda Cronise for all their time and hard work and to everyone who helped prepare for the occasion.

The couple will make their home in Hollins, VA.
