Junius A. Haskins, a member of the City Council and a civil rights leader, died Friday from what appeared to be a heart attack in Washington, D.C. He was 54.
Haskins and other city officials were on their way to the office of U.S. Sen. Charles Robb, D-Va., when Haskins collapsed Friday afternoon inside the Russell Office Building.
Haskins previously had served on the Lynchburg School Board. He was a member of dozens of civic boards and housing organizations, and spent 12 years as president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
He was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Lynchburg. After majoring in physics at Hampton Institute from 1961 to 1964, he studied further at the University of Virginia Extension while working as a machine technician. In 1969, he joined the Lynchburg Community Action Group as youth director, rising to assistant director at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife, Claudette, and a son, Jemon. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
