BALL, Wilmer, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 19, 1997, in a Salem hospital. A graduate of Honaker High School, he later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Ball retired after 40 years of service from Graybar Electric as manager at both the Roanoke and Bristol locations. A charter member of North Roanoke Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon until the present time. Mr. Ball was a member of Melrose Masonic Lodge #139 A.F.&A.M. He was preceded in death by his father, Willard Ball Sr.; his mother, Tina Wallace Ball; brother, Earl Joe Ball; his twin brother, Willard Ball Jr., and his sister, Anna Pearl Ball. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty Jane Wilson Ball; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ball and Andrew Puglise of Dallas, Texas, and Kay Ball Hillyard and Rick Hillyard of Atlanta, Ga.; two beloved grandsons, Jonathan Michael Hillyard and Christopher Ball Hillyard; two sisters, Sue Ball Kiser of Honaker and Lora Gay Ball Lee of Fort Wayne, Ind.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ralph Kiser and Lorene Ball of Honaker, Mary Rose and Garland Jessee of Roanoke, and Marie and Glen Wilson of Castlewood; a special family friend, Otto Wilson, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel. Funeral services in Roanoke will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 1997, from Oakey's North Chapel. Dr. Darryl G. Crim will officiate. The family also will receive friends after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker. Funeral services in Honaker will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 22, 1997, at Honaker Funeral Home. The Rev. Darrell Fletcher and Brother Leslie Richie will officiate. Interment will be in Russell Memorial Park, Lebanon.
BELL, Martha S., 102, of Roanoke, died Saturday, January 18, 1997. She was born in Helena, Mont., on February 13, 1894, to William S. and Amelia K. Bell. She earned her M.S. Degree from Columbia University and her Certificate of Library Science from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. Miss Bell served as Librarian for many colleges and universities across the country. She retired as Head Librarian from Randolph-Macon Woman's College after 35 years of service. During her tenure there, she oversaw plans for construction of the original building which is now Lipscomb Library, and established an outstanding collection which is the nucleus of the College's holdings today. She is survived by a wide circle of friends and admirers who remember her as an elegantly warm lady who enriched their lives with her keen mind and generous spirit until the time of her death. Memorial services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church of Roanoke at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 1997, with the Rev. Frank Allen and the Rev. Thomas O'Dell officiating. Interment will follow in Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg. Memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
BROWN, Dorothy Farmer, 79, of Salem, passed away Friday, January 17, 1997. She was a Salem resident for the past 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh B. Brown Jr. She was a member of the Salem Lioness Club and attended E dgewood Christian Church. Ms. Brown was a graduate of the Lewis Gale School of Nursing and a former Director of Nursing at Pulaski County Hospital. She is survived by her sisters, Inez Farmer St. Clair of Salem and Madeline Micou of Dublin. She is also survived by nieces, Ann St. Clair, and Sargent and Carol St. Clair Davis of Salem, Nancy Micou Norris of Oriental, N.C., and Agnes Micou Lilly of Chesterfield. Funeral services will be conducted from the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem at 11 a.m. Monday, January 20, 1997, with Larry Atkin officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery in Dublin. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice.

CAMDEN, Betty Jo, 44, of Lexington, died Saturday, January 18, 1997, in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born on July 5, 1952, in Rockbridge County, she was the daughter of the late Max Jarvis and Helen Reese Jarvis Tyree. She also wa s preceded in death by her stepfather, Dorman Tyree. Mrs. Camden was a member of Grace Trinity Church. She is survived by her husband, Buddy Wilson Camden; foster son, Jake Sensabaugh of Buena Vista; sister, Donna Keys of Lexington; nieces, Angie Richardson, Paige Richardson and Doris Garrett of Buena Vista, Malinda Hartbarger of Lexington and Betty Smith of New York, N.Y.; a nephew, Mickey Tyree of San Diego, Calif., and a special friend, A. C. Davis of Lexington. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 1997, from the graveside in Timber Ridge Cemetery, with Pastor Jim Reynolds officiating. HENDERSON, Ida Bell Turman, 100, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, January 18, 1997, at Heritage Hall Health Care. She was born in Dugspur, Va., on June 2, 1896, to the late Jefferson Davis and Susan Oney Gardner Turman. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Frank Henderson, and a son, William F. Henderson. She is survived by two daughters, Crystal H. Washington, Richmond, and Martha Henderson, Dugspur; five sons, James E. Henderson and Minor Frank Henderson, both of Richmond, Trent Henderson, Colonial Heights, Hugh T. Henderson, Rustburg, and Gerald D. Henderson, Blacksburg; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. HODGE, Wanda Hartwell, 84, of Salem, passed away Thursday, January 16, 1997. She was born in Summers County, W.Va., and was a Salem resident for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Hodge. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert an d Vera Hodge of Ironto, and Jerry and Sandra Hodge of Lynchburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Frank Hopkins of Clifton Forge, Janie and Jack Jeffries of Salem, Shelby and Steve Galanes of Salem, and Jackie and Ronald Dooley of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Irene Hartwell, and brother-in-law, Norvel Turner, both of Hinton, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. HUFF, Charles Walter, a lifelong resident of Christiansburg, died at home with his family Saturday evening, January 18, 1997 at the age of 84. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, Reva Spence Huff. He is also survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Doris Wirt Huff of Baton Rouge, La.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kitty and Mike Byrd, Betty and Jay Jones, Doris and Wayne Elliott all of Christiansburg; two sisters, Mary Page Tidwell of Durham, N.C. and Lyda Moody of Denver, Co.; as well as several nieces and nephews. ``PaPa"" will be greatly missed by his eight grandchildren, Sheri and Carmen Elliott, Chuck and Scott Huff, Stacy Jones Wilson, Jason Jones, and Greg and John Byrd; also by his three great-grandchildren, Miles Hayden Wilson, Christine Huff, and Stella Mae Byrd. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jesse Woodward with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. MORRIS, Dora Jane Metts, 66, of Glade Hill, passed away Sunday, January 19, 1997. She was born April 30, 1930. She graduated from Radford University, and was a longtime member of Rocky Mount Christian Church. D. J. was an avid golfer and former club champion at The Waterfront. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry W. and Bessie Tyree Metts; her brother, B. Herman Metts, and her daughter, Jane Metts Morris. Surviving are her husband, James H. (``Jimmy"") Morris of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi Kay Morris Beeman and John A. Beeman, and one granddaughter, Alyssa Jane Holladay Beeman, all of Boulder, Colo. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Ruby G. Metts of Glade Hill; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Taylor F. and Catherine Morris of Florida; her aunts, Angie Tyree, Paige Tyree Bennett, Mary Frances B. Tyree and Myrle S. Metts; also, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joe Lindsoe officiating. PARKS, Lucille Overstreet, 96, of Big Island, died Saturday, January 18, 1997, at Medical Care Center in Lynchburg. She was born in Bedford County on April 6, 1900, a daughter of the late Henry Robert Overstreet and Bertha Inez Hodges Overstreet. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Robert Parks Sr., and a son, Douglas Overstreet Parks. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mrs. Parks is survived by a son and his wife, S. Robert Parks Jr. and Inez S. Parks of Big Island; a daughter, Mary P. Markham of Bedford; five grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Garry Shelton and the Rev. J. Michael Jones officiating. PORTERFIELD, Florence Wren, 87, of Blacksburg, formerly of Newport, passed away Sunday, January 19, 1997 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville. She was born May 23, 1909, the daughter of the late William Otha Wren and Nellie Jo hnson Wren of Selma, Va. She lived most of her life in Newport, Va. and was a member of Sherry Memorial Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Porterfield; a daughter, Nellie P. Janey and son, Lewis L. Porterfield. Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Jane P. Janey of Blacksburg and Mrs. John (Leathia) Atkins of Maybrook; a son, William S. Porterfield of Newport and a sister, Mrs. Marie Brock of Highland Springs; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, in the Newport Cemetery at Newport. There will be no public visitation time.
