Former Salem High School star Mark Byington matched his season high with 21 points, and North Carolina-Wilmington erased a 16-point first-half deficit to edge Richmond 56-53 on Monday night in a Colonial Athletic Association game in Wilmington, N.C.
Byington hit seven of eight shots, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range to lead the Seahawks (9-10 overall, 4-3 conference). Carlos Cueto led Richmond (6-8, 2-4) with 14 points.
In other games:
VMI 57, East Tennessee State 54: Jason Bell scored 14 points, and the Keydets (7-10, 3-2) held off a late surge by the Buccaneers(4-11, 0-4) to win their second consecutive Southern Conference road game.
Maurice Spencer added 13 points for VMI, which won Saturday at The Citadel.
Syracuse 62, No.12 Villanova 60: Marius Janulis scored all 15 of his points on 3-pointers, and Todd Burgan had 10 points in his return from a seven-game suspension as the Orangemen (11-7, 2-5) knocked off the Wildcats (14-4, 5-3) in a Big East Conference game in Philadelphia.
Syracuse, which did not score for nearly seven minutes to open the game while falling behind 12-0, held Villanova without a field goal for the final seven minutes. Freshman Tim Thomas, who finished with 23 points for the Wildcats, missed a running jumper with five seconds left. The Wildcats got the rebound, but a desperation shot by Alvin Williams missed at the buzzer.
William and Mary 69, Virginia Commonwealth 61: Terence Jennings scored 17 points, including a pair of crucial baskets in the final minutes, as the Tribe (5-10, 2-3) beat the Rams (6-9, 2-4) in a CAA game in Williamsburg.
Women
Charleston Southern 76, Radford 73: The Highlanders rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit to take a one-point lead with 24 seconds left, but the Bucs scored the final four points to win a Big South Conference game in Charleston, S.C.
Freshman Joy Taylor led the Bucs (8-6, 4-0) with a career-high 34 points. Bassett High School graduate Kim Hairston led Radford (7-10, 3-2) with 22 points, including the Highlanders' last three. Rebecca McNeil (Christiansburg) added 14 points.

KY. LOSES ANDERSON FOR SEASON: Kentucky guard Derek Anderson, the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference, will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, coach Rick Pitino said. Anderson is a fifth-year senior, which means his collegiate career is over.
Anderson (18.6 points per game) injured the knee in the second half of third-ranked Kentucky's victory over Auburn on Saturday.
UCONN STARS SIT, WAIT: Connecticut point guard Ricky Moore and center Kirk King cannot travel with the Huskies until their suspensions are lifted, leaving some doubt about whether they'll play against Miami on Wednesday. Moore, a sophomore, and King, a senior captain, were declared ineligible last week pending an NCAA ruling on whether they should be further penalized for accepting improper gifts - reportedly airline tickets.
CINCY SUSPENDS FLINT: Damon Flint, a starting guard for ninth-ranked Cincinnati, has been suspended for tonight's game at North Carolina-Charlotte, after being more than an hour late for practice Monday morning, said Tom Hathaway, Cincinnati's sports information director. Senior Darnell Burton will start in Flint's place.
