Vegetarian potluck
The Virginia Vegetarian Society will hold its first potluck gathering of the year at 7 p.m. Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Grandin Road at Brandon Avenue, Roanoke.
Bring a favorite nonmeat dish and copies of the recipe (or at least the ingredients) as well as any ideas you have for future programs.
A $1.50 contribution per adult will go toward the costs of beverages, building use and postage. Kids and carnivores are welcome.

Cooking classes
Roanoke County Schools Adult Continuing Education will present a variety of cooking classes starting Feb. 18. Offerings will include meatless main dishes; low-calorie, low-fat desserts; breakfast, lunch, supper and munchies suggestions; and high-fiber green cuisine. Wellness fair
Garlic soup and garlic cookies from 'Tis the Season and organic fare from Micayla's Culinary Artistry will be among the foods featured at a health fair in Bedford on Saturday. A variety of wellness modes will be represented, including herbalism, Qigong, massage therapy, therapeutic touch and reiki. Admission will cost $5 to the event 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. at the Builders' Hall.

Cooking for the elderly
Nutrition and menu planning for the elderly will be discussed on Jan. 30 at the Roanoke United Methodist Home, as part of a nine-session course developed by the American Red Cross. Lunch will be provided from 12:30 to 1 p.m., with the class lasting until about 3 p.m. The session costs $5. Call 985-3544.
