The Pulaski County Electoral Board agreed Tuesday to seek applicants for the county registrar's job.
Applications will be taken between now and Jan. 31 for someone to complete the remaining two years of Phyllis Hanks' term, which runs through March 31, 1999.
Hanks was fired Oct. 15 after being charged with depositing three refund checks to her office to her personal account. She pleaded guilty to an embezzlement charge Dec. 16, received a five-year suspended sentence and was placed on probation for three years.
The electoral board, composed of Margaret Farris, Don Sheffey and Beth Ann Holmes, got through the November election with temporary help in the registrar's office.
Applicants for the post, which pays $31,690 a year, must be registered Pulaski County voters. They must also have at least the equivalent of a high school education, and have experience including budget preparation, public relations and communication skills.
Some people are seeking the position already.
"We have received some letters of interest and resumes from numerous citizens, and applications have been mailed to them," Farris said. "They are requested to return them to the board."
The board set its annual meeting for 10 a.m. Feb. 4 in the county courthouse. At that meeting, it will appoint election officials in each county precinct from names submitted by both political parties.
The board is also seeking a new polling place in Belspring as the Baptist Church, which had served as the poll, is carrying out a building program. The county Board of Supervisors will consider a new location during its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.
Anyone interested in the registrar's job can pick up an application at the county administrator's office at 143 3rd St. or write to the Pulaski County Administrator, 143 3rd Street N.W., Pulaski, Va. 24301.
