HOOSIERS HOLD ON 72-70

Neil Reed scored 20 points and A.J. Guyton added 15 and grabbed a game-saving rebound in the final seconds Tuesday night as No.21 Indiana turned back No. 13 Michigan 72-70 in Bloomington, Ind.

Forced to a three-guard lineup because of the absence of injured forward Andrae Patterson, Indiana used its quickness and the shooting of Reed, Guyton and Michael Lewis to build a 15-point lead midway through the second half.

The Hoosiers (16-4, 3-3 Big Ten) were outscored 20-7 the rest of the way, however, and a rebound basket and two free throws by Maceo Baston capped an eight-point run that brought Michigan (13-5, 4-3) within two points with three minutes to go.

Michigan was led by Maurice Taylor with 16 points and Baston had 14.

In other games:

No.7 Maryland 103, Penn 73: In Baltimore, Keith Booth returned home to score 26 points and fellow Baltimorean Rodney Elliott made his first nine shots and scored a career-high 22 points as the Terps (16-2) swamped the Quakers (5-7).

Booth had 16 points in the first half and finished 11-of-17 from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Elliott hit 10 of 11 shots before leaving to a standing ovation with 3:26 left.

No.9 Cincinnati 77, N.C. Charlotte 67: In Charlotte, N.C., Danny Fortson scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Bearcats (13-3, 3-0 Conference USA) held off the 49ers.

Tremaine Gardiner pulled the 49ers (12-5, 4-2) into a 65-65 tie with two minutes left on a putback, but the Bearcats pulled away in the final minutes.

At end of the game, several Cincinnati players got into an altercation with some 49ers fans as they made their way off the court. According to Bearcats coach Bob Huggins, sodas and ice were thrown at his players as they ran through a tunnel toward their locker room.

No.10 Duke 70, NC State 55: In Raleigh, N.C., Mike Chappell sparked a key second-half stretch as the Blue Devils spanked the Wolfpack.

Jeff Capel had a season-high 25 points off the bench - including seven over the final 2:27 - and Trajan Langdon added 16 as the Blue Devils (15-4, 4-2 ACC) beat the Wolfpack for the 12th time in the last 14 meetings.

N.C. State (8-7, 0-6) matched its worst ACC start since the 1992-93 season when its finished 2-14 in the league. Damon Thornton led the Wolfpack with 15 points.

James Madison 59, East Carolina 55: In Greenville, N.C., Eugene Atkinson hit six free throws in the final 16.5 seconds to help the Dukes (10-5, 4-2) hold off the Pirates in a Colonial Athletic Association game. The loss snapped an eight-game home win streak for East Carolina (12-4, 5-2) and dropped the Pirates out of a tie for the conference lead.

Massachusetts 64, Rhode Island 60: In Amherst, Mass., Lari Ketner scored 13 points as Massachusetts used an 11-0 run in the second half to turn back the Rams in Atlantic 10 action.

Charlton Clarke added 11 points for UMass (9-9, 3-2). Tyson Wheeler led the Rams (11-5, 5-1) with 16 points.

Women

George Washington 82, Virginia Tech 44: Noelia Gomez scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures as the Colonials (11-4, 6-0) ripped the Hokies in an Atlantic 10 matchup in Blacksburg.

Renee Maitland and Kim Seaver paced the Hokies (6-11, 1-5) with 11 points apiece.

The Hokies mustered just 26 percent shooting and were outrebounded 52-32.

Roanoke 96, Emory & Henry 93, OT: Former Cave Spring star Amy Athey scored 30 points as the Maroons overcame Sallie Lefler's late-game heroics to remain unbeaten in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with an overtime win in Emory.

Roanoke (9-1, 7-0) had an 11-point lead with 55 seconds remaining in regulation when Lefler nearly carried the Wasps to the upset. Lefler, who led Emory & Henry with 26 points, scored her team's final eight points and hit a basket as time expired to send the game into overtime.

Ashley McCallum (William Byrd) had a game-high 16 rebounds for the Maroons. Suzanne Moore (Blacksburg) hit four 3-point shots for the Maroons.

Angie Simpkins (Auburn) scored 24 points and dished out 11 assists for Emory & Henry (7-5, 6-3).

Hollins 63, Lynchburg 58: Sara Tweedy and Northside graduate Tanya Holmes combined for 11 3-point field goals to lead Hollins (3-9, 2-8) to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory in Lynchburg.

Tweedy, who led Hollins with 21 points, connected on six of her seven field goals from beyond the arc. Holmes, who added 19 points, was 5-of-8 in 3-point field goals attempts.

Kelly Fackler, a former Fieldale-Collinsville star, led Lynchburg (3-9, 2-8) with 19 points.

Bridgewater 68, Washington and Lee 45: Kristie Olson scored 15 points as the Eagles (12-2, 9-1) topped the Generals in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Bridgewater. Amber Hinkle's 10 points paced Washington and Lee (5-9, 3-7).

MAROONS TOP POLL: Roanoke College's men's basketball team is No.1 in the South Region, according to the first NCAA Division III basketball poll released Tuesday.

The Maroons are 12-1 overall and have a 7-0 record in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

``That's where we were last year, so it's nothing we're not used to,'' said Roanoke coach Page Moir. ``Five weeks from now I'd like to be there, too.''

Other ODAC teams ranked in the South Region were Bridgewater (tied for third) and Hampden-Sydney (tied for eighth).

Rowan, which won last season's Division III championship in Salem, is 13-0 and ranked No.1 in the Atlantic. National semifinalist Illinois Wesleyan (15-0) is No.1 in the Midwest and national runner-up Hope College (13-2) is No.1 in the Great Lakes Region.

ARSON SUSPECTED: Police said an arsonist started a fire that caused extensive damage to the University of Miami men's basketball office early Monday morning in Coral Gables, Fla.

Although it will take time to assess the extent of the damages, the cost of repairs could reach $100,000, the Miami Herald reported.
