GALAX FIRE CLAIMS LIVES OF 2 YOUTHS

Two children died in an early morning fire Tuesday on Max Drive in the Pipers Gap section of Carroll County near Galax.

The victims were identified as Mark Andrews Spears, 12, and John Robert Spears, 13. Their father, Edward Spears, and two other children, Jennifer Spears and Matthew Spears, escaped the blaze but the father and Matthew were hospitalized in critical condition from burns.

Carroll County Sheriff Warren Manning said they were taken to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax and transferred to North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

The Galax city Fire Department and Sheriff's Office are investigating the fire. Manning said it apparently started around a wood stove used to heat the house and is not considered a suspicious fire.
