PARRY MCCLUER DUMPS HIGHLAND

Parry McCluer got off to a quick start and used free-throw shooting to keep Highland at bay, winning 69-62 in a Pioneer District boys' showdown Tuesday night in Monterey.

David Coleman scored 16 points, Chip Coleman added 14 and Mike Decker 13 for the Fighting Blues ranked second in the state sportswriters' Group A poll.

Parry McCluer (13-0 overall, 3-0 in the district) held a 19-14 lead after the first quarter, when they got three of their six 3-pointers, and led 37-31 at the break.

Jacob Hull paced the Rams (8-1, 0-1), tied for seventh in the poll, with 25 points, 12 of them off 3-pointers.

Glenvar 73, Giles 67: Josh Williamson scored a game-high 30 points as the Highlanders handed Giles its first Three Rivers District loss.

Williamson was 12-of-18 from the free-throw line as Glenvar (5-9, 2-1) was 31-for-43 at the stripe. Robbie Claytor and Ben Brown had 17 points apiece for the Spartans (7-6, 2-1).

Bland 74, Fort Chiswell 52: The Rockets stormed to a 20-6 tilt through the first quarter and went on to pick up a Mountain Empire District victory over the Pioneers in Bland.

Lee Meadows and Heath Puckett scored 17 points each and John Thompson added 11 for the Rockets (9-2, 4-0).

Derrick Jackson led the Pioneers (6-5, 2-2) with 18 points.

Narrows 73, Pocahontas 57: Joe Shipbaugh scored a game-high 24 points as the Green Wave rolled to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Indians in Narrows.

Shipbaugh scored 16 points in the first half as Narrows (6-4, 2-2) went up 39-26. David Murphy led Pocahontas (0-8, 0-4) with 21 points overall.

Ballard (W.Va.) Christian 66, Covington Boys Home 63: Jonathan Spencer scored 27 points and David Spencer added 19 to lead Ballard Christian past the Indians in a non-district game in Covington.

Boys' Home battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit to 64-63 on a 3-pointer by Bernie Cooper with 1:15 to play. David Spencer hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining, and the Indians failed to score on their final possession.

Mike White had 18 points for Boys' Home.

Fieldale-Collinsville 63, Bassett 51: The Cavaliers overcame a shaky start to win a Piedmont District game in Collinsville.

Joey Taylor and Lamont Perkins had 18 points each for Fieldale-Collinsville (6-8, 1-3), which took control in the second quarter after trailing 14-7.

Bassett got 11 points from Orlando Gravely.

Martinsville 71, Laurel Park 63: Leander Preston scored 26 points, including 10 in the final quarter, as the Bulldogs recovered from a slow start to beat the Lancers in a Piedmont District matchup in Martinsville.

Jason Wells added 15 points for Martinsville (7-6, 3-1), which outscored Laurel Park 22-10 in the second quarter.

Jeff Slade paced the Lancers (9-4, 1-3) with 22 points and Eric Jones added 18.

Christiansburg 74, Alleghany 72, OT: Scott Baker's layup with 10 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the visiting Blue Demons to a Blue Ridge District victory.

Led by Ramey Pendleton's 20 points, including six 3-point baskets, Alleghany (3-10, 1-6) took a two-point lead on Mike Brown's two free throws with 12 seconds left in regulation.

Christiansburg (8-4, 2-2) countered to send the game in overtime on Matt Reynolds' hoop with four seconds left in regulation. Eric Lucas had 22 points for the Demons, and Baker added 20.

George Wythe 78, Northwood 66: Brian Barnes scored 21 points to spark the Maroons (8-3, 4-1) to a Hogoheegee District victory over the Panthers (2-9, 1-6) in Saltville.

Barnes was aided by Lance Goff, who scored 13 points, and Justin Bourne and Brian Jones, who added 12 each.

Matt Doane and K.C. Carter each had 14 points for Northwood.

Galax 57, Grayson County 54: The Maroon Tide overcame poor free-throw shooting with a determined rebounding effort to win a Mountain Empire District game in Galax.

The Maroon Tide (6-5, 3-0) missed seven free throws in the final two minutes to keep Grayson County (8-3, 2-1) within striking distance.

Nate Noel and B.B. Brown combined for 25 points and 20 rebounds for Galax. Grayson County got 12 points each from Derek Phipps and Brad Elkins.

Chilhowie 68, Rural Retreat 60:Joel Donnelly and Jared Thompson scored 21 points each to lead the Warriors past the Indians in a Hogoheegee District game in Rural Retreat.

Earl Allen added 16 points for Chilhowie (7-5, 4-1), which held a 13-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Wayne Terry led Rural Retreat (1-7, 1-2) with 34 points, 15 of them on 3-pointers. Jason Vipperman grabbed 14 rebounds for the Indians.

Covington 83, Craig County 79, OT: Erwin Twitty scored six of his 18 points in overtime, leading the Cougars to a Pioneer District opening victory on the road.

Craig County (1-6, 0-2) rallied in the fourth quarter behind Dwayne Crawford, who scored 26 points. Tracy Walker paced all scorers with 28 points for Covington (4-6, 1-0).

Carlisle 67, North Cross 57: The Chiefs broke open a close game in the third quarter to pull away for a Virginia Independent Conference victory in Martinsville.

Carlisle (5-5, 4-3), which led 30-29 at the half, outscored the Raiders 25-10 in the third quarter as Russ Mason scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Chiefs in the period.

Marty Stanley had 17 points to lead Carlisle. North Cross (3-7, 2-5), which had nine 3-point field goals in the game, was led by Jeff Bosett's 17 points.

Girls

Franklin County 48, Amherst County 44: Tasha Williams hit a jumper with 27 seconds left to break a 44-44 tie, and the Eagles held on for a non-district victory in Rocky Mount.

Amherst (2-9) had a chance to tie, but Franklin County's Samantha Woods converted a steal into a layup with time running out to preserve the victory.

Williams led the Eagles (4-8) with 12 points. Lauren Chambers led Amherst County with 11.
