COACH SUSPENDED AT E&H

Bob Johnson, the men's coach at Emory & Henry, was placed on indefinite suspension Wednesday by the school.

Johnson will not coach until an investigation into complaints by players is completed. First-year assistant coach Rob Canaday will take over in Johnson's absence.

In Canaday's first game Wednesday night, former William Byrd standout Donald Childress led the Wasps to a 105-88 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Washington and Lee.

Childress had a team-high 22 points and six rebounds. Tyrone Hash chipped in 15 points for the Wasps (3-10 overall, 3-5 ODAC).

Matt Jackson led Washington and Lee (2-12, 1-7) with 17 points.

A committee comprising athletic director Lou Wacker, two professors and Board of Trustees member Dr. Emmett Richardson has been formed to investigate the complaints. An administration source at Emory & Henry said, ``The complaint was of a serious nature, and the college takes complaints of this nature seriously.``

Two Wasps players, sophomores William Fickes and Cory Hicks, quit the team Jan.14 and two more, juniors Jason Light and Garrett Noegel, quit on Jan.15.

An Emory & Henry player who requested not to be identified said Tuesday, ``The proper people know the whole story and they're learning the facts day by day.''

In 16 years with Emory & Henry, Johnson has a career record of 240-195.
