State police program needs volunteers
The Virginia State Police Volunteer Service Program is looking for volunteers to perform a variety of duties including clerical support, photography and vehicle maintenance.
Hours are flexible but are usually during normal business hours. A background check is required. Interested people should contact Olivia MacDonald at (804)-674-2229.
Spring sports clinics for players, coaches
The Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department is holding a softball camp at William Byrd High and Middle Schools Feb. 21-22 for boys and girls ages 10 to 18. The camp will cover pitching, hitting, fielding and motivation by instructors Pam Schaffrath and Michelle Delloso, former Silver Bullet players. The entry deadline is Feb. 7. The $55 fee includes T-shirts.
The department is also conducting a clinic for baseball and softball coaches on April 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Cave Spring High School. The clinic will cover fundamentals for practice, games and communication skills. The fee is $30 per coach. The registration deadline is March 21.

Programs and classes for teens begin
Several programs for teens are being offered by the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department. The Brambleton Teen Center is holding a Super Super Bowl Party on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Pizza, popcorn, chips and drinks are included. Admission costs $4 or $3 with a teen center identification card.
Teen-agers can learn how to surf the Internet at a free class that will meet 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Brambleton Teen Center on Jan. 30, Feb. 20 and March 13.
Two sessions of an American Red Cross baby-sitting certification course will be offered. The course costs $31 and includes information on job hunting, child safety and first-aid. The first session will be held on Feb. 1, 8 and 15 1:30-5 p.m. at the Brambleton Center. The second session will take place at the Craig Center on March 22, 29 and April 5 9 a.m.-noon.
The department is also sponsoring a new Youth Whitewater Kayak Club. No previous knowledge of kayaking is necessary.

Noel C. Taylor award nominations due
Total Action Against Poverty is accepting nominations for the sixth annual Noel C. Taylor Distinguished Humanitarian Award. Nominees must live in the TAP service area and promote unity, respect, compassion and commitment to creating opportunity for all.

Open house tonight at tech school
The Arnold R. Burton Technology Center will hold an open house today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tours, demonstrations, door prizes and refreshments will be offered.
The center provides technical training to Roanoke County high school students in 17 fields including auto service technology, electronics and commercial art. A variety of continuing education courses are offered in the evenings through the Roanoke County Adult Education Department.

Senior activities set for February
The Roanoke City Parks and Recreation Department will offer a South of the Border!" party for seniors Feb. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brambleton Center in cooperation with parks and recreation departments of Roanoke County and Salem. The party will feature Mexican food, pinatas, games and music. Admission is $6, and preregistration is required. Other senior activities in February include:
*Old-fashioned country dances Feb. 7 and 21 at the Buena Vista Recreation Center, 1030 Penmar Ave., Roanoke. There will be live music 7:30-11 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door.
*The Caroloa Chorus, which sings at nursing homes, hospitals and schools, meets on Mondays at the Mountain View Recreation Center from 10:30 a.m. to noon. All skill levels are welcome.
The department also offers classes for seniors including ballroom and line dancing, tai chi, water aerobics, bridge and knitting.

Local sorority chapter holds essay contest
The Roanoke Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is sponsoring an essay contest for pupils in grades three through eight. Participants must write a essay on the influence of African-American history and culture.
The winner from each grade level will receive a prize and an engraved plaque.

Grief support group begins at hospice
The Good Samaritan Hospice is offering a Living with Loss support group for those dealing with grief.
Two groups are available. The first meets on Monday nights beginning Monday 4-5:30 p.m. and lasts for six weeks. The second class will meet on Wednesdays, Feb. 6 to May 14, 6:30-7:15 p.m. Both classes are free, but preregistration is required. To register or for more information, call Alice Scott at 776-0198.
County sponsors Wednesday ski trips
Midweek "Ride and Slide" ski trips are being offered by Roanoke County Parks and Recreation and Arrow 94.9 FM. Every Wednesday through March 8, a bus will leave Tanglewood Mall at 5 a.m. to take skiers to the Snowshoe and Silver Creek resort in West Virginia. Trips will return to Roanoke at about 8:30 p.m.
The $47 fee includes lift ticket and transportation, add rentals and a lesson for $10 more. Participants must register and pay by the Friday prior to the the trip. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 387-6091.
