Insurance may pay for breast test

WASHINGTON - Just one day after a government panel offered a mixed message on mammograms for women in their 40s, legislation was introduced in the House Friday that would require insurance companies to pay for them.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., would prohibit any insurance plan, including government programs such as Medicaid, from denying coverage for annual mammograms to women 40 and older.

On Thursday, advisers to the National Cancer Institute concluded that women should decide for themselves whether to have mammograms during their 40s. They agreed that mammograms starting at age 50 are vital, cutting breast cancer deaths by about 30 percent.

The American Cancer Society recommends mammograms every year or two starting at age 40.

New York might sue AOL for refunds

NEW YORK - Adding to America Online's growing pains, New York's attorney general said Friday he will sue the company unless it promises refunds and stops promoting a pricing plan it can't reliably deliver.

``You don't sell 10,000 tickets to a theater that you have only 3,000 seats for,'' Attorney General Dennis Vacco said. ``Consumers that want refunds should be able to get refunds.''

Vacco said he notified AOL in a letter that a lawsuit alleging false advertising and ``repeated and persistent fraud'' would be filed next Thursday unless the company provides a satisfactory response.
