BOWERS, Doris Lawrence Sr., 83, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, January 23, 1997, in a Salem hospital. He is survived by his wife, Glada Hale Bowers of Floyd; three children and spouses, D. L. (Larry) Jr. and Shirley Bowers, Roanoke, Glada Mae and Michael Laz zuri, Roanoke, Brenda and Chuck Casper, Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, Carl Bowers, Milton, Fla., Arno Bowers, Blacksburg, Glenville Bowers, Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Revonda Madison, Rhonda Clark, Stacey Ripple, Chris Lazzuri, Brian Lazzuri, Dana Lazzuri, Timothy Casper, Jonathan Casper; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 1997, at Gardner Funeral Home with Elder Hale Terry officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. BURTON, Steven Edward, 27, of Christiansburg, died suddenly Thursday night, January 23, 1997, as the result of an automobile accident. An employee of the Montgomery County Schools, he is survived by his wife, Teresa Akers Burton; two sons, Robert Neal Burton, age 4, Brandon Lee Burton, age 3; his parents, Ralph and Barbara Burton; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tim and Pat Akers; grandmothers, Evelyn Burton, Nellie Cooper; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Butch Hatcher, Cindy and Darrell Price; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray Burton, Roy and Valerie Burton, Dewayne and Daphne Burton, all of Christiansburg; also several wonderful aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many special friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 27, at the New Hope Church of God conducted by Pastor Mike Bond with burial in Sunset Cemetery. The body will be placed in the New Hope Church of God at 1 p.m. Sunday, where friends may call any time. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.
CLARK, Maude Irvine, 84, of Natural Bridge Station, died Thursday, January 23, 1997, in the Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility, Lexington. Mrs. Clark was born March 15, 1912 in Rockbridge County, a daughter of the late Arthur Younger Irvine and Florence Ellen Duff Irvine. She was a member of the Natural Bridge Christian Fellowship Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tulley R. Clark; and one son, Jack F. Clark. Surviving are one daughter, Tillie R. Clark, Natural Bridge Station; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 25, 1997, at 3 p.m. from the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Barry Nall officiating. COSSON, Willie L., (``Billie""), 98, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 24, 1997, at home. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Harold Fariss; a grandson and his wife, Michael and Rebecca Fariss; two great-granddaughters, Angela and Stephanie Fariss, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Evergreen Burial Park, at 1:30 p.m. Monday with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. FOX, Charles Marshall, (``Bo''), 76, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, January 23, 1997, at the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born August 19, 1920 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late David Isaac and Nannie Pugh Fox. He was a member of the First Brethren Church. He is survived by a sister, Bonnie Mae Layne, Ashland; a brother, Houston D. Fox, Buena Vista; a half sister, Isabelle Agnor, Buena Vista; several nieces and nephews. LIVELY, James Oliver, (``Pete''), 56, of Radford, passed away Thursday, January 23, 1997. He was a self-employed electrician, and was a member of Local Union #637 IBEW, and a member of the Belview United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of VFW Post #1184 of Pulaski, New River Chapter #138 of the Vietnam Veterans, and was a member of the Christiansburg DAV. He was preceded in death by his father, James Frank Lively. Survivors include his wife, Betty T. Lively of Radford; his mother, Nettie Boone Lively of Radford; one son, James David Lively of Radford; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth L. and Cort Via of Aurora, Colo.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Zelda and Leslie Boyd of Dublin, Arleta and Robert Boyd, and Betty and Ernest ``Bud'' Craft, both of Radford; four grandchildren, James Michael Lively, Courtney Michelle Lively, Jessica Danille Lively, and Olivia Jane Via; special friends, Nelson Ward and Jessie Correll. OGDEN, Francis Ralph, 75, of Glasgow, died Friday, January 24, 1997, at his residence. Mr. Ogden was born in Amherst County on February 17, 1921, and was a son of the late Frank Carl Ogden and Esther Ruby Clements Ogden. He was married to the late Beatrice King Ogden. Mr. Ogden was a member of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church in Amherst, and was retired after 35 years as part owner, Vice President and Secretary of R&O Fuel Service and Reynolds Chevron Inc. He also was an honorary member of Glasgow Fire Department, and was active in various civic organizations. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Ogden was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Ogden and Harold Ogden. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John R. Jordan of Midlothian; daughter, Ruby Clark of Glasgow; his stepmother, Elizabeth Ogden of Amherst; two sisters, Mary O. Fitzgerald and Esther O. Stinnett of Amherst; four brothers, Newton Ogden of Martinsville, Billy Ogden of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Frank Ogden Jr. of Lynchburg and Norman Ogden of Monroe; three half sisters, Ann Ferguson of Amherst, Freida Cook of Madison Heights and Geraldine Price of Harrisburg, N.C.; six half brothers, Robert Ogden, Steve Ogden, Gail Ogden and James Ogden of Amherst, Gary Ogden of Madison Heights and Cecil Ogden of Burkeville, and two grandsons, John Jordan Jr. and Andrew Jordan of Midlothian. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 1997, at Harrison Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Nelson, assisted by the Rev. William Thomas. PAGANS, Frances English, 87, of Wirtz, went to be with her Lord Thursday, January 23, 1997. Born September 7, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Nannie Bett Williams English. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Lawson Pagans Sr.; two sons, Ervin S. Pagans and Mearl Pagans; one daughter, Ruby Lillian Holland; and grandson, Jube Lee Holland; three great-granddaughters, Monica Lynne Pagans, Ashley Pagans, Jenny Holland; six brothers; and four sisters. Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Flossie and Posey Holland of Rocky Mount, Nancy Holland of Wirtz, Mildred and Henry Hartz of Rustburg, Estelle and Floyd Bolling of Moneta, Drucilla and Mack McCoy of Wirtz; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Pete Jr. and Edith Pagans of Moneta, Helen (Mrs. Ervin S.) ROBERTSON, Alton Reese, 92, of Wirtz, passed away Thursday, January 23, 1997. Born October 30, 1904, he was a son of the late Jacob Henry and Nannie Oyler Robertson. Mr. Robertson went to work August 15, 1925, working for Roanoke Railway & Electric Co., drove a streetcar, then drove the bus for Safety Motor Transit, where he retired from in 1971 after 46 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Perdue Robertson; six brothers, Vogie E., John, James, Berkley, Woodrow, Clyde Robertson; one sister, Rowena Robertson. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Freddie and Jerri Robertson of Martinsville; two grandchildren, Cindy R. Varney and Charles Alton Robertson, both of Powells Point, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Kelly Elizabeth Robertson, Andra Nicole Robertson, Heather Laura Hagler, Lee Alfred Varney, all of Powells Point, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 1997, at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bruce Johnson officiating.. Interment will follow in the Robertson Family Cemetery. Brantley of Houston, Texas; one son, Curtis Robinette of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Verda Voltz of Fawn Grove, Pa., a nd Avis Bainbridge of Joppa, Md.; three grandchildren, Tony Pickett of Knoxville, Tenn., Amy Robinette and Mary Pat Robinette, both of Rural Retreat. SHAVER, James Ballard, 66, of Pearisburg, passed away Thursday, January 23, 1997, at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born on May 27, 1930, he was the son of the late Robert Sr. and Laura Earnestine Shaver. He was a retired employee from Newberry Ford in Pearisburg. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Robert Lee and Clyde Shaver. Surviving are his wife, Clara Carter Shaver; four brothers, Harold Shaver of Blacksburg, Lee Shaver of Salem, Ronald Shaver of Roanoke, and Bobby Shaver of Christiansburg; three sisters, Edith S. Williams, Betty S. Mahaffey, and Lottie Shaver, all of Pearisburg; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 26, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Kendall Funeral Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. VanNESS, Crawford Alexander, 68, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, January 23, 1997, at the Veterans Medical Center in Salem. Born June 2, 1928 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Crawford ``Jack'' and Elva Martin VanNess. He was a Korean War veteran, member of the V.F.W. and Moose Lodge. Mr. VanNess was a self-employed master electrician and carpenter. He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Chaplin, Kilgore, Texas, and Diane Montgomery, Glasgow; a brother, Ralph VanNess, Natural Bridge; six grandchildren. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dean Staton officiating. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. WATSON, Sara Louise, 78, of Richmond, formerly of Wytheville, died Friday, January 24, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy A. Watson Sr.; one sister, Elizabeth Udell; and three brothers, James, Oren, and Watson Spraker, all of Wytheville. She is survived by one brother, Robert F. Spraker Sr. of Wytheville; six children, Janet W. Grimes and Troy A. Watson Jr., both of Richmond, Carol W. Rawls of Laurel, Md., Gary L. Watson of Scarborough, Maine, Vicki W. Kensky of Tampa, Fla., David L. Watson of Mooresville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, Kimberly and Patrick Rawls, Brian BeCraft, Amy Pigford, Emily Grimes, Adam and Lesley Watson, Alison and Jessica Watson, Nicholas, Lindsay, Ashley and Michael Watson; and ten nieces and nephews. Born in Maryville, Tenn., she spent her early childhood in Winston-Salem, N.C. until moving to Wytheville. Married on December 7, 1941, she was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church, and served as dietitian and manager of the Scott Memorial School in Wytheville. She was a loving wife and mother who gave unselfishly to family, friends, and neighbors. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 25, 1997, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 1997, at the Grubb Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in West End Cemetery.
