CATHOLIC GETS COLD SHOULDER

North Cross won a Virginia Independent Conference boys' matchup with archrival Roanoke Catholic on Friday night 56-39 as the Celtics went ice cold on their home floor.

Catholic (5-10 overall, 4-3 conference) shot 28 percent from the field, hitting only 16 of 58 attempts.

Jeff Baetz and Michael Stoeckle led the Raiders (4-7, 3-5) with 16 points each. David Foster tossed in 10.

Brendan McCarthy and Chad Wall led the Celtics with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

In other games:

James River 73, Covington 63: Phillip Meador led the Knights on a second-quarter surge as James River topped the Cougars in a Pioneer District game in Buchanan.

Meador, who led the Knights with 18 points, scored eight in the second quarter as James River outscored Covington 24-11 to take a 31-23 lead.

Travis Blankenship scored 17 points and Tommy Blankenship added 13 for the Knights (5-7, 1-1).

Tracey Walker had 24 points for the Cougars (5-7, 2-1).

Girls

North Cross 43, Roanoke Catholic 34: Raiders forward Michele Hamilton stole the show with 31 points in a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Celtics on Roanoke Catholic's court.

Hamilton scored 17 of North Cross' 20 points in the first half, including all 10 in the second quarter. She also scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, nine on free throws, for the Raiders (8-4, 7-2).

Christy Hinman led the Celtics (2-13, 1-8) with 10 points and six rebounds.
