Blacksburg merchants should tend to ice
On Jan. 14, the Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg placed an ad in the New River Current thanking their customers for their patronage. If these merchants truly wish to show their appreciation, they would make sure that the streets of downtown Blacksburg were kept free of ice and snow.
Their efforts should include not only the sidewalks of their own establishments but also areas otherwise uncared for, such as those in front of unoccupied stores. After the recent snowfall, many sections of South Main Street, Draper Road and College Avenue were very difficult to maneuver because of icy patches.
Also of concern is that some parking lots in Blacksburg were dangerous to walk or drive on, for example, the one serving the Food Lion shopping mall on North Main Street. Merchants should follow the good example set by the staff of the Blacksburg Community Center. They showed concern for their patrons by having their walkways and parking lot shoveled and spread with gravel, making it safe for senior citizens and others who use this facility.
