BREEDER'S ANIMALS NEED CARE HUMANE SOCIETY FLOODED WITH CALLS

At least 100 people called the Franklin County Humane Society on Friday to ask about adopting some of the cats and dogs taken from Ferrum breeder Valerie Green.

For now they will have to wait, because Green filed an appeal of the judge's decision Thursday to remove the animals from her care, said Donna Essig, humane society President.

The commonwealth's attorney said he will try to get the appeal heard soon, but it could be two weeks to a month or more, Essig said. The humane society will continue boarding the animals at kennels and veterinarians' offices until then.

Since Jan. 3, when the society took custody of some of the 120 animals at Green's home, the society has run up a $5,000 bill, Essig said, and some of those animals are pregnant.

People interested in adopting an animal can call the society's hot line at (540)489-3775 and leave a message, she said. Volunteers are calling people back as quickly as they can.

Those who wish to make a contribution can earmark their tax-deductible donation for the care of Green's animals and send it to the Franklin County Humane Society. P.O. Box 755, Rocky Mount 24151.
