TIMESLAND DUO KEY TO ROANOKE'S WIN

Suzanne Moore (Blacksburg High School) scored 14 points and Amy Athey (Cave Spring) blocked a last-second shot as Roanoke held off Maryville 69-67 on Saturday in Salem.

For the second consecutive game former Timesland high school standouts helped keep the Maroons unbeaten against NCAA Division III South Region opponents.

The Maroons (11-1) led by as many as 11 points in the second half before Maryville closed to 68-64. After Moore hit a free throw with 12 seconds remaining, Maryville's Meghan Casey nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds left to make the score 69-67.

The Scots (6-7) stole the inbounds pass, but Athey swatted away the potential tying shot and Ashley McCallum (William Byrd) pulled down the rebound to seal the victory.

In other women's games:

Duquesne 84, Virginia Tech 67: Korie Hlede was too much for the Hokies as the junior All-American scored 30 points to lead the Dukes to an Atlantic 10 Conference victory in Pittsburgh.

Hlede, who added nine rebounds and four assists, helped Duquesne come back from a three-point deficit with 16:31 remaining in the game.

Tech (6-13 overall, 1-7 conference), which was led by Kim Seaver's 16 points, pulled to 54-50 with 13:47 to play, but that was as close as the Hokies would get the rest of the way.

North Carolina-Asheville 62, Radford 60: Marcia Napier scored 20 points and hit the winning layup with 15 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs (8-7, 4-3) came from behind to hand the Highlanders (7-12, 3-4) a Big South Conference loss at the Dedmon Center.

Radford has lost three consecutive Big South games for the first time since the league began women's play in 1986. Kim Cruise (Pulaski County) led the Highlanders with 14 points.

Ferrum 63, North Carolina Wesleyan 54: Melisa Buchanan had 18 points and 14 rebounds to propel the Panthers (7-7, 2-2) to a Dixie Conference victory over the Battlin' Bishops (4-7, 1-2) in Ferrum.

Emory & Henry 77, Washington and Lee 61: Angie Simpkins (Auburn) had a monster game, contributing 18 points, eight assists and seven steals, to lead the Wasps (9-5, 8-3) past the Generals (5-10, 3-8) in Emory. Amber Hinkle led W&L with 18 points and Jessica Morton scored 17.

Meredith 78, Hollins 45: Sarah Bennett had 15 points and five rebounds to lead Meredith to a victory on Hollins' court. Wendy Cooper added 12 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for the Angels. Amy Worley paced Hollins with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
