FIRE AT VIRGINIA STOPS MEET

A Virginia-Duke women's swim meet Sunday in Charlottesville was halted after a fire in a dryer at the UVa Aquatics-Fitness Center forced the evacuation of the building.

No injuries were reported, but after a one-hour delay the meet was postponed. There was no report on damage to the facility, and no makeup date for the completion of the meet was announced.

In other sports in the region:

* ``Hurricane'' Harry Cunningham, a student at the Star City Boxing Academy, kept his professional record unblemished with a unanimous decision over Marshall Miller on Saturday night in Elizabethton, Tenn.

Cunningham was scheduled to fight David Huertas, but the card's promoters decided the weight difference between the two heavyweights was too great, so Miller was substituted. Cunningham (4-0) knocked down the former Southeastern Golden Gloves champion in the second and third rounds.

* Paula Allan finished fifth in two events during the weekend to lead the Virginia Tech track and field team a the USAir Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.

Allan had a best throw of 13.78 meters in the weight throw and 13.51 meters in the shot put. Justin Davis led the Tech men with a 10th-place finish in the 800 meters in a time of 1 minute, 55.02 seconds. The Hokies finished eighth in the men's 1,600 relay with a time of 3:17.39.
