February, Black History month, is just around the corner, and it's a good time to think about contributions made by African-Americans.
The Roanoke Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is sponsoring an essay contest on the influence of African-American history and culture. Kids in grades three-eight are eligible to participate. The winner in each grade will receive a prize and an engraved plaque.
Information on the contest, which ends Feb. 28, is available at your school, or you can call 366-3968.
In addition to Black History month, other dates of note in February:
*Feb. 2: Groundhog Day. Legend says if the groundhog sees his shdadow on this day, there will be six more weeks of winter.
*Feb. 8: The Boy Scouts was established in the United States in 1910.
*Feb. 11: National Inventors Day.
*Feb. 14: Valentine's Day.
*Feb. 15: Susan B. Anthony Day. This American woman's rights pioneer was born in 1820.
*Feb. 16: The first daily television news in the United States was broadcast on NBC in 1948.
*Feb. 20: In 1962, John Glenn became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth.
*Feb. 29: Leap year every four years.
