The following students were selected as Seniors of the Month for December by the Montgomery County School Board. These students, along with those who were selected as Senior of the Month for January, were recognized at the School Board meeting last week. Students who were recognized as Seniors of the Month for January will be featured in the Feb. 4 Class Notes column.
* Being senior class president is nothing new for Dana Garnand of Auburn High School. Garnand has been class president for three years and was also vice president of the Student Council Association her junior year. As a senior, she also holds several other offices, including vice president of the National Honor Society and secretary of the Ruritan Club.
Garnand has also participated in the following activities: Latin Club, Spanish Club, College Club and the Beta Club. She also has been a member of the peer support group for four years. She is the daughter of Douglas and Ellen Garnand of Riner.
* Blacksburg High School senior Laura Lentz has participated with the National Forensics League for three years and has served as secretary and president. She also has been involved with the International Club, Future Business Leaders of America and the Inter-Club Council. Lentz also has participated in several school plays. She was house manager for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and on the house committee for "The Curious Savage" and "Rehearsal for Murder."
Lentz also has been an active member of Blacksburg Baptist Church. She is senior class representative for the church's high school ministry committee and also served on the transition team committee and church youth group. She also is a seven-year member of the Virginia Baptist Acteens Organization. She is the daughter of Clark and Mary Ann Lentz of Blacksburg.
* Kristin Habeeb has attended Model General Assembly for the past two years as part of the Youth and Government Club at Christiansburg High School. This year she is president of the club. She attended the Virginia Girls' State and the Rotary Club Leadership Conference. Other activities that she has been involved with include the Student Council Association, Students Against Drunk Driving, yearbook and the National Honor Society.
Habeeb also has participated in several sports. She played basketball for three years and volleyball for two years of volleyball. She also played tennis for three years and was first team all-district as a sophomore and junior; she also received the most valuable player award (sophomore) and leadership award (junior).
Habeeb is a recipient of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club Junior Academic Achievement Award and the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Award. She is the daughter of Kathleen Habeeb of Christiansburg and Edward Habeeb of Virginia Beach.
* Kristi Henson has been on the fast track since her freshman year at Shawsville High School. Henson is captain of the cross country team for the second year. She is a four-year letterman who also has been the most valuable girls cross country runner at the school for the past two years. In addition, she has made the all-district cross country team for the past three years. Henson also has lettered for three years in track. She received the Shawnee Award in track as a freshman and made all-district track as a sophomore and junior. Henson also has played basketball and volleyball for four years, having lettered in both.
Henson is just as involved with extracurricular and academic activities as she is with sports. She is senior class treasurer, vice president of the Beta Club and president of the Art Club. She also has participated for three years with the English Mountain Academic Competition Conference team. As a junior, she received a Blacksburg-Christiansburg Rotary Academic Award and for three years has received the Virginia High School League Academic Excellence Award. She is the daughter of Perry and Gloria Henson of Shawsville.
MEETINGS, EVENTS & HAPPENINGS
The Blacksburg High School PTA will have a special program on Advanced Placement courses today at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium. The program will include an overview of the fall 1997 AP courses. Questions will be answered by AP teachers and the guidance department.

Blacksburg High School's football team will have its annual chili supper Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. The supper includes chili, cole slaw, crackers, cookies and drinks. Tickets are $3.50 per plate and may be purchased from any team member or at the door. Children may share a plate and take-out orders are available. Proceeds from the sale will go toward team expenses.

The fourth-graders at Kipps Elementary School will have an indoor yard sale Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the school's cafeteria. The children are raising money for the annual fourth-grade class trip to Williamsburg.

The Montgomery County Public School's Gifted Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 in the School Board office. The meeting was originally scheduled for tonight at the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library.

The Auburn High School Swing Choir will have a spaghetti supper Friday in the school's cafeteria. Food will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under. Carryouts are available. For advance tickets, stop by the school or call 382-5160.
