Four months after he was gunned down in a Las Vegas attack, Tupac Shakur was named favorite rap-hip hop artist at the American Music Awards on Monday night.
Shania Twain, Brooks & Dunn, Toni Braxton and New Edition also won major honors at the 24th annual fan-selected awards ceremony.
Alanis Morissette and Toni Braxton were double winners on a night the AMA saluted ``The Year of the Woman.'' Mariah Carey, nominated for five awards, went home empty-handed.
Garth Brooks was once again favorite male country artist, his 11th AMA honor since 1991. Twain, a new artist winner last year, was country's favorite female artist.
Braxton won favorite female soul R&B artist and her ``Secrets'' was the top soul-R&B album. Morissette was favorite pop-rock female artist and her ``Jagged Little Pill'' won as pop-rock album.
New Edition claimed the favorite soul-R&B honor.
Young newcomer Jewel beat Donna Lewis and No Doubt for favorite new pop-rock artist. LeAnn Rimes, a teen-ager already singing beyond her years, was rewarded as country's favorite new artist.
Metallica picked up its second trophy for hard rock-heavy metal.
