Police said a homemade fire bomb was used to damage an automobile Monday.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when a beer bottle containing a combustible liquid and a paper towel wick was ignited and thrown at a 1985 Audi sedan.
The car, parked in the 400 block of Harding Avenue near the elementary school, was unoccupied. Its owner was inside a house and heard a loud noise when the bottle was hurled at the car, evidently from a nearby parking lot.
He ran outside to find flames around the car's windshield, beneath the hood and along the passenger side.
A Blacksburg Fire Department member who happened to be passing by quickly extinguished the blaze. Damage to the car was estimated at $800.
No one was injured.
