The civil rights group known for fighting religious displays in public and a Virginia resident known for placing religious displays in public have teamed up to fight Fairfax County.
The American Civil Liberties Union and Rita Warren filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Alexandria Tuesday seeking to force the county to drop a residency requirement for people seeking to display exhibits on the courthouse lawn.
The ACLU and Warren agreed to file the suit after she was denied permission to place a creche in front of the Fairfax County Government Center. Warren said she was told she couldn't display the exhibit because she lives in the city of Fairfax.
``The ACLU and Warren may not have the exact same objectives, but the principle of free speech serves both our purposes equally well,'' said KentO Willis, state ACLU director.
