DEFENSIVE LINEMAN COMMITS TO UVA

Virginia's football program reportedly has received an oral commitment from Darryl Sanders, a first-team All-Washington Metro selection from Leonardtown, Md.

The Washington Post reported that Sanders, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound defensive lineman, picked the Cavaliers over Maryland. Sanders, rated the No.12 prospect in Maryland by SuperPrep magazine, went to UVa's football camp.

There were unconfirmed reports that Virginia Tech has a commitment from Derek Piniella, a linebacker from Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla. Piniella is the son of Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella.

The plan is for Derek Piniella to enroll at Tech in 1998.
