MARTINSVILLE STOPS BASSETT

Landa Martin scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as Piedmont District-leading Martinsville pulled away for a 61-50 victory over Bassett on Tuesday night in Martinsville.

Harvey Millner added 13 points and Markus Hairston 10 for the Warriors (10-3 overall, 4-0 district). Magna Vista took control early in the final quarter and hit its free throws down the stretch.

Corie Manns scored 16 points and Andre Fuller 15 for Bassett (5-10, 2-3).

Alleghany 58, Northside 56, OT: Casey Burks hit a short jumper with three seconds remaining in overtime to give the Mountaineers a Blue Ridge District victory in the Vikings' gym.

With the score tied at 56, Alleghany called a timeout and set up a clear-out play for Burks. The senior guard, who led the Mountaineers with 16 points, drove the lane and canned a three-footer.

Alleghany (4-11, 2-7) rallied from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter and had a chance to win the game in regulation, but turned over the ball with three seconds left.

Ramey Pendleton had 14 points for the Mountaineers, and Travis Davis added 10.

Northside (2-12, 2-5) was led by Greg Purdue's 10 points.

Jefferson Forrest 52, Staunton River 45: Cold early shooting spelled doom for the Golden Eagles as the visiting Cavaliers (9-8, 5-3) recorded a Seminole District victory in Moneta.

Staunton River (6-10, 1-4) scored just three points in the first quarter as Jefferson Forrest led 11-3 after eight minutes. The Golden Eagles gradually found their shooting touch, but it was too late as Staunton River got no closer than six in the final period.

Win Hunter led a balanced Jefferson Forrest attack with 10 points. Eric Nichols, who had three 3-pointers, scored 17 for the Golden Eagles.

Bath County 48, Covington 44, OT: Adam Grist scored 18 points in the Chargers' Pioneer District overtime victory over the Cougars in Covington.

Bath County (7-5, 1-1) made nine of 11 free-throw attempts in overtime to seal the victory. Grist hit all six of his shots from the line in the extra period. Eric Neilsen added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Tracey Walker had 17 points and nine rebounds for Covington (5-8, 2-2).

Liberty 77, Rustburg 43: Raymond Arrington hit six 3-pointers en route to 20 points as the Minutemen routed the Devils in Rustburg.

Cheyney Preston added 12 points for Liberty (14-1), which is 8-0 in the Seminole District.

Andree Haskins paced Rustburg (10-6, 4-4) with 14 points.

Highland 83, Craig County 64: Jake Hull paced the Rams with 28 points, 19 of them in the first half, and Brian Werner added 23 as Highland dumped the Rockets in a Pioneer District game in New Castle.

Brad Armstrong added 14 for the Rams (9-2, 2-2), who turned it on in the third quarter, outscoring Craig County 27-14.

Brent Bradley led the way for the Rockets (1-8, 0-4) with 17 points. Dwayne Crawford added 15 and Jarvis Pauley 10.

Narrows 84, Galax 78, OT: Joe Shipbaugh and Jason Mullins led the charge for the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District victory over the Maroon Tide in Narrows.

The Wave (7-5, 3-3) overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter behind 12 points from Shipbaugh and a tying 3-pointer at the buzzer by Mullins. Mullins and Shipbaugh proceeded to score six points each in overtime, finishing with 21 and 31 points, respectively. Jason McCroskey added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

B.B. Brown scored 18 points to lead Galax (8-6, 5-1).

Cave Spring 71, Franklin County 47: Alex Phillips scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Knights had no problems with the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District matchup at Cave Spring.

Ricky Dierker scored 13 points and David Harms added 10 for the Knights (11-5, 3-2). Patrick Drakeford paced the Eagles (4-12, 0-5) with 11 points and Philip Clayborne added nine before he was ejected for kicking a Cave Spring player.

Radford 68, Shawsville 36: The Bobcats took a big early lead and coasted to a Three Rivers District victory over the Shawnees in Shawsville.

Radford (7-4, 3-1), which was led by John Robertson's 19 points, raced to a 19-4 lead at the end of the first period and increased the advantage to 20 points by halftime.

Andrew Crowder added 17 points for the Bobcats. Simon Jones led Shawsville (1-12, 0-5) with 17.

Parry McCluer 74, James River 45:The Fighting Blues (15-0, 5-0) used a balanced attack to down the Knights (5-8, 1-2) in a Pioneer District game in Buchanan.

Mike Clark had 14, Mike Decker 12 and Robert Snider 11 and David Downs 11 each to lead the Blues to victory.

Phillip Meador scored 10 points for the Knights.

Patrick Henry 93, Pulaski County 56: The Patriots took it inside and outside on the Cougars and rolled to a Roanoke Valley District victory in Dublin.

Boo Battle led Patrick Henry (11-4, 3-1) with 27 points, 13 in the first quarter. He got help inside from Malik Shareef, who scored 16. Ronnie Kasey took care of business on the perimeter, hitting two 3-pointers and scoring 19.

The Cougars (8-7, 1-3) were led by Dorian Hendricks and Ron Branch, who scored 16 points apiece.

Bland 53, Rocky Gap 48: Adam Akers missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the score with four seconds remaining, and the Eagles made two free throws to seal the Mountain Empire District victory in Rocky Gap.

Heath Puckett sank eight of nine shots from the field to score 16 points for the Rockets (10-3, 5-1) and Lee Meadows added 15.

Adam Akers finished with 12 points for Rocky Gap (3-11, 1-7), while Matthew Akers had 17 and Kenny Shrader 13.

Floyd County 89, Giles 57: Jason Dalton scorched the nets in Floyd as the Buffaloes (15-0, 5-0) stampeded the Spartans (7-8, 2-3) in a Three Rivers District contest.

Dalton lit up Giles for 36 points, hitting 13 of 16 attempts from the field and all three from beyond the 3-point stripe. He also had seven rebounds and 27 points by halftime. Travis Cantrell contributed 22 points and seven assists.

Robbie Claytor led the Spartans with 19 points.

Glenvar 68, Auburn 59: Josh Williamson scored 24 points and Donnie Wimmer added 11 as the Highlanders held off the Eagles in a Three Rivers District matchup in Glenvar.

Glenvar (6-9, 3-1) held a 19-8 lead after the first quarter, but Auburn came back in the third quarter by outscoring the Highlanders 18-8.

Seven players fouled out of the physical affair, including four Highlanders, but neither team capitalized at the free-throw line. Glenvar hit 26 of 40 field-goal attempts, and Auburn connected on 19 of 36 free throws.

Ryan Nolan paced Auburn (3-10, 1-4) with 19 points and Jason Vaughn added 11. Adam Loveday grabbed eight rebounds as the Eagles outrebounded Glenvar 34-24.

Lord Botetourt 66, Blacksburg 60: Lord Botetourt swingman Sean Osbourne led three Cavaliers scorers in double figures, hitting for 20 points to spark a Blue Ridge District victory over the Indians in Daleville.

Osbourne's 6-of-9 shooting and six assists helped lead the Cavaliers (9-4, 4-4) back from an 11-point deficit in the game's opening minutes. Jason Hunt scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. As a team, the Cavaliers blistered the nets at a 63 percent clip on the evening and outscored the Indians 19-8 from the free throw line.

Phillip Klaus led Blacksburg (6-8, 3-5) with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Martinsville 68, Fieldale-Collinsville 56: The Bulldogs capitalized on offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Cavaliers in Collinsville.

Martinsville (8-6, 4-1) sealed the Piedmont District victory by taking advantage of 19 Fieldale-Collinsville turnovers. Manti Venable led the Bulldogs with 18 points, Kelsey Green had 15 and David Walker 13.

Joey Taylor led Fieldale-Collinsville (5-10, 1-4) with 16 points.

Tazewell 57, Carroll County 42: Will Horton scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogs past the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game in Tazewell.

The Bulldogs (7-7, 2-4) outscored the Cavaliers (5-9, 2-1) in every quarter, but the second quarter was key as Tazewell had a 13-4 advantage.

Carroll County was led by Earl Johnson, who had 13 points.

Carlisle 80, North Cross 74, OT: Lamont Franklin poured in 32 points to lead the visiting Chiefs to an overtime Virginia Independent Conference victory.

North Cross (4-8, 3-5), which trailed 36-29 at halftime, came back to take a two-point lead at 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

After several lead changes, the Raiders sent the game into an extra period when David Foster hit a 12-footer with three seconds left in regulation. The Chiefs (7-6, 5-4) outscored North Cross 18-12 in overtime.

Charles Martin had 12 points for Carlisle. Foster led the Raiders with 18 and Michael Stoeckle added 17.
