3-WAY BRAWL SENDS BOY, 2 MEN TO JAIL

Two men and a 16-year-old boy were charged after a brawl involving a knife, a hammer and an ax handle, police said.

Capt. Pat Sullins of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office said a ``wild scene'' greeted deputies when they arrived about 5 p.m.

``One guy was chasing another guy with a hammer, while another man was standing in the yard screaming,'' Sullins said. ``People were running every which way.''

Christopher N. Payne, 22, was arrested for hitting the youth with an ax handle, and the youth was arrested for stabbing Payne with a knife, Sullins said. Both were charged with malicious wounding.

Michael Swift, 21, was charged with felonious assault for attacking the boy with a hammer.

Police did not know what the disagreement was about.

Payne was treated for stab wounds in his chest and arm and was released from Mary Washington Hospital, and the boy and his parents refused medical treatment, police said.

The boy was placed in the Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center. Payne and Swift were released on bond.
