REGULATORS OK INCREASE IN ELECTRIC BILLS

The State Corporation Commission said Thursday that it has approved a request by American Electric Power Co. to pass on to its customers an increase in the amount it pays for fuel to generate electricity.

The increase will become effective Feb. 1, adding $1.18 or about 2 percent to the monthly bill of a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, the SCC said.

The increase that the agency approved in AEP's "fuel factor" will produce an estimated $17 million annually. The fuel factor will increase from 1.364 cents per kilowatt hour to 1.482 cents.

The state allows utilities to recover their fuel expenses dollar for dollar.

AEP is Virginia's second-largest electric utility, with 440,000 customers in 31 Southwest Virginia counties. AEP operates in seven states and has 7 million customers.
