BAYS, Elizabeth Edrie, 89, of Rt. 3, Bedford, passe d away Thursday, January 30, 1997 in a local nursing home. She was born in Bedford County on September 12, 1907, a daughter of the late Joseph Bruce Craghead and Lily Lipscomb Craghead. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hill G. Bays and a son, Robert Bays. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, J. B. and Peggy Bays and Donald and Sandy Bays of Bedford; a daughter, Edrie Bays, Salem; a brother, Clinton Craghead, Moneta; two sisters, Alma Obenchain, Moneta, Ruth St.Clair, Hardy; seven grandchildren, Bruce Bays, Mike Bays, Robin Pittman, Jeff Bays, Donsan Bays, Jeff Jackson, Paul Jackson; and six great-grandchildren. GEARHEART, Charles William, (``Bill""), 73, of Craig County, and formerly of Salem, died Thursday, January 30, 1997. He was employed by John H. Hampshire, Inc. for many years and retired as president of Acoustical Services, Inc. Mr. Gearheart was a lifetime member of the Salem Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris fellow. He was also a member of the New Hope Union Church and of the Upper Craig's Creek Volunteer Fire Department, both in Craig County. He raised black Angus cattle and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Gearheart is survived by his wife, Dorothy Duncan Gearheart; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Bobby Robertson, Ann and Jimmy Harrell; grandsons and wives, Craig and Kim Robertson, David and Debra Robertson; granddaughter, Jennifer Robertson; great-grandchildren, Michael, David, Amber, Karly, and Cody Robertson, all of Craig County. He is also survived by brothers, John of Floyd, Robert of Winchester, Gene of Massachusetts, Jimmy of Florida, Jack of Roanoke; sisters, Margie Wyse of Ohio, Helen Guthrie and Betty Shockley, both of Salem; many other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at Lotz Salem Chapel at 12 noon on Saturday with the Rev. R.C. Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. GREEN, Thelma Lee Hambrick, 87, of Richmond, died at home on Wednesday, January 29, 1997, after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Roanoke. She attended Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee, and was a retired employee of Miller & Rhoads. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church for 42 years and was a choir member, Sunday School teacher and youth counselor. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Rev. W. Julius Green; two sons, Donald Reeves Green and his wife, Tricia, and Douglas Lee Green and his wife, Jane; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Blanche Hudgins and Helen Gearheart of Roanoke, and Ellen Williams of Memphis, Tenn. Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 828 Buford Rd. Interment will be at Dryfork Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dryfork.
HYPES, Ralph Gordon, 67, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, January 29, 1997. He is survived by a daughter, Cindy Nuckles, two sons, Rick Hypes and John Hypes, brothers, Paul Hypes, Emory Hypes, Alvin Hypes and Romaine Roberts. JANSONS, Emilija Goldmans, 89, of Rt. 3, Bedford, died Wednesday, January 29, 1997 at her residence. She was born in Riga, Latvia on October 5, 1907, a daughter of the late Janis Goldmans and Agnes Bauman Goldmans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolfs Otto Jansons. She is survived by three daughters, Arija Ekstrom, Bedford, Diana Kuskevic, Hamilton, Ontario, Regina Jan sons, Huntington Beach, CA.; one sister, Zelma Baskers, Kalamazoo, MI.; four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. NORMAN, Edith Daniel, 89, passed away on Thursda y, January 30, 1997, in a Salem nursing home. Mrs. Norman spent most of her life at West Point, Va. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Herbert G. Daniel and Ruth Mitchell Daniel of Troutville, and Richard L. Daniel and Estelle Harris Daniel of Finksburg, Md.; two grandsons, Gregory T. Daniel and Christopher L. Daniel; one granddaughter, Karen Daniel Weirich; three brothers, Woodrow Haley of Providence, R.I., Bernard (``Dick"") Haley of Deltaville and William R. (``Buck"") Haley of Richmond, and three sisters, Virginia (``Clemmie"") O'Connell and Olivia (``Polly"") French of Richmond and Burnley Haley Ashley of West Point. She also is survived by two great-grandsons, and numerous nephews and nieces, including a special niece, Margaret Ashley Roberts. The family will receive visitors at Vincent's Funeral Home in West Point from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997. Services will be conducted by the Rev. PATTON, Anne Hoover Belcher, 69, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away Monday, January 27, 1997, in Logan Regional Hospital after a long illness. She was born April 3, 1927, in Widen, W.Va., to Frederick Bryce and Nellie Virginia Whytsell Hoover. She married Paul A. Patton on April 6, 1947, in Charleston, W.Va. He preceded her in death on March 18, 1976. She married Norris Elwood Belcher on February 2, 1979. They later divorced. Anne was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She made homemaking an art. Her home was always filled with beautiful handmade articles. She was an expert seamstress and cook. Many times her husband, Paul, would bring home guests from the nation's capitol to sample her fried chicken and lemon meringue pie. No matter how short of notice, she always presented the guests with a beautiful dinner, and they never failed to return for more. She was a successful Avon Representative for 16 years. She was a former member of the Cross Lanes Bible Church of Charleston, W.Va., and Lakeside Baptist Church of Roanoke, Va. She attended Grace Baptist Church of Logan as her health permitted. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Pam and David Tolman, Smithfield, Utah, Jeanne L. Patton, Franklin, Idaho. She has eight grandchildren, Sierra Dawn Patton, Franklin, Idaho, David (Mandi) Tolman Jr., Preston, Idaho, Katie Tolman Pickett, Smithfield, Utah, Jeremiah, Judson, Eden, Lincoln and Caleb Tolman, all of Smithfield; five great-grandchildren, Kassie and Tosha Tolman of Blaine, Wash., Levi and D. J. Tolman of Preston, Idaho; Taylor Jackson Pickett, Smithfield, Utah. Also surviving are her sister and seven brothers, Irelene (Ross) Salisbury, Frederick Bryce Hoover, James (Louise) Hoover, all of Nitro, W.Va., David (Rose) Hoover and Conrad (Carol) Hoover, all of Lorraine, Ohio; Herbert (Hope) Hoover, Pratt, W.Va., Ronald Hoover, St. Albaney, W.Va.; Glenn Hoover, Beckley, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Rhett Jackson Tolman; a sister, Edna Hoover, and her husband, Paul Patton. Her last years presented many difficult trials and she fought courageously to stop the progression of her disease. We love you so much, mother, and we will miss you. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Grace Baptist Church, 475 West 600 North, with Pastor Jerry Stonehouse officiating. ROBERTS, Clarence Leland Jr., 76, of Moneta, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 1997. Born in Oregon December 31, 1920, he was a son of the late Clarence L . Sr. and Cora Wilson Roberts. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Leigh and Elizabeth Canterbury. Surviving are his wife, Adella L. Roberts of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Clarence L. III and Sharon Roberts of Hardy; brother, Kenny Roberts of Astoria, Ore.; granddaughter, Nicole Roberts of Portland, Ore.; grandson, Patrick Roberts of Williamsburg; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta with Father James J. Begley officiating. SUTHERS, Lloyd W., (``Jake''), 66, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Wednesday, January 29, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer, was inducted into the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was the son of the late Albert E. and Betty Williams Suthers. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Kincer Suthers of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Linda Suthers, Danny and Tammy Suthers, David and Lisa Suthers, all of Wytheville; one sister, Sue Reardon of Rural Retreat; five brothers, Charles S. WELLS, Nannie Mae, 97, of Lafayette, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, January 30, 1997. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sealy J. Wells Sr.; a son, Sealy J. Wells Jr., and a granddaughter, Carole Sue Grose. WILLIAMS, Frances Stump, 7 0, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, January 29, 1997, at her home. Mrs. Williams was born on December 5, 1926, and was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Zora Morris Stump. Mrs. Williams was also preceded in death by her husband, John Campbell Williams Jr.; two brothers, Charles and William Stump; and two sisters, Mabel Martin and Virginia Stump. Mrs. Williams formerly worked as a waitress for the Virginian Restaurant and the Holiday Restaurant in Pearisburg for 15 years. She is survived by four daughters, Drema Shadowens of La Vergne, Tenn., Judy Stables of Narrows, Rhonda Tomlin of Lynchburg, and Kathy Stafford of Pearisburg; one son, Bobby Williams of Pearisburg; one brother, Douglas W. Stump Sr. of Palmyra; one sister, Mary Ellen Hobbs of Pearisburg; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 1, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev.
