Circuit Judge Clifford Weckstein has been elected chief judge of the 23rd Judicial Circuit, which includes Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem.
Weckstein was elected to the post at a recent meeting of the circuit's six judges. He succeeds Roy Willett, who held the position since 1989.
The duties of a chief judge include appointing substitute judges and deciding where they will hear cases within the circuit; coordinating courtroom security measures with sheriffs' offices; serving as spokesman for the judges when necessary; and presiding over ceremonies such as swearing in new judges.
Weckstein, who was elected to a two-year term as chief judge, has been a circuit judge since 1987 and presides primarily in Roanoke. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and graduated from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1974.
He is a member of the boards of governors of the Criminal Law Section of the Virginia State Bar, the state's Judicial Sentencing Guidelines Committee, the bar's Professionalism Course and other professional groups.
