OBIT

ALLEN, Edward W., 75, of Fishersville, was taken to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 30, 1997, as a result of cancer. Born June 13, 1921 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Charlie and Sadie Glover Allen. He was a veteran of World War II, who volunteered into the Navy in 1942 as a ``Lee Volunteer of Virginia''. A front page article in The Daily News Leader, July 21, 1992, told the story of five boyhood friends who entered the war together. Mr. Allen worked as an auto paint and body mechanic. He was in business for himself for many years at Allen's Auto Body Shop in Waynesboro. He then worked for the Augusta County School System, repairing and painting school buses and state cars for 22 years, until retiring June 1986. He was a proud and active member of AA, having just received his 32-year medallion. He was a member of the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Melvin May; and a son, Ricky Henderson. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, G. Marie Al len; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel and D. H. Wright, and Betty and W. G. Bell; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Marge Allen of Roanoke, and Bruce and Debbie Allen of Stuarts Draft; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Ronnie Fisher of Waynesboro, and Sue and David Brubaker of Stuarts Draft; grandsons, Eric Fisher, Greg Fisher, Nathan Fisher, Jimi Henderson of Waynesboro, and David Allen of Roanoke; granddaughters, Rhonda Henderson and Christy Ross of Waynesboro, Jennifer Allen of Roanoke, Brittany Allen, Gina Brubaker, Jessica Brubaker, and Tarya and Katie Fitzgerald of Stuarts Draft; great-grandson, Brett Fisher; and great-granddaughters, Erica and Ashley Fisher and Kaitlyn Ross; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He enriched many lives and will be greatly missed. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Waynesboro Chapel of Etter-Reynolds Funeral Service with the Rev. Todd Hammond officiating. Interment will follow in Augusta Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. There will be public viewing. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Miller, Bud Weekly, Doug Deffenbaugh, Dan Durrett, Charles McGuffin, and Marvin Norman. Honorary pallbearers will be Rudy Freed, Don Garber, John Walters, Rick Stoner, Eugene McCutchen , Louis Daughtry, Jessee Bowman, and Walter Althizer. ALLEN, Ernest Lee, 77, of Newport, died Friday, January 31, 1997, at Giles Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 1, 1919 in Craig County to the late James Edward and Annie Laura Hughes Allen. Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Cloe Davis Allen; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Womack, Floyd; three brothers-in-law, Daniel Davis, Goldie Davis, both of Blacksburg, and Evert Davis, Elliston; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be h eld at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 1997, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Homer Sawyer and Rev. James R. Kittinger officiating. BARKER, Sarah Evalee Goodman, of Bristol, Va., died Thursday, January 30, 1997. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and A. Daniel Cole of Roanoke, Frances and Herschel Stevens, Bristol, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Mary Barker, Kingsport, Tenn. BASHAM, Paul R., 72, of Shawsville, passed away Thursday, January 30, 1997, in the V.A. Medical Center, Salem. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, and was a retired employee of the V.A. Medical Center with 31 years of service. Mr. Basham was a member of the American Legion and the Elliston VFW Post. Preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Sally Mae Lovern Basham, he is survived by his wife, Irene Sowder Basham; three children and their spouses, Paul Thomas and Brenda Basham, Shawsville, Phyllis B. and William Okes, Florida, Mary B. and Leon Haley, Shawsville; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, February 3, at the graveside in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, by Rev. V. N. McHone, with military honors provided by the Elliston VFW Post. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 2, at the Seneca Baptist Church, Elliston. BAYS, Elizabeth Edrie, 89, of Rt. 3, Bedford, passed away Thursday, January 30, 1997 in a local nursing home . She was born in Bedford County on September 12, 1907, a daughter of the late Joseph Bruce Craghead and Lily Lipscomb Craghead. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hill G. Bays and a son, Robert Bays. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, J. B. and Peggy Bays and Donald and Sandy Bays of Bedford; a daughter, Edrie Bays, Salem; a brother, Clinton Craghead, Moneta; two sisters, Alma Obenchain, Moneta, Ruth St.Clair, Hardy; seven grandchildren, Bruce Bays, Mike Bays, Robin Pittman, Jeff Bays, Donsan Bays, Jeff Jackson, Paul Jackson; and six great-grandchildren. DEEL, Frank L. Jr., 78, of Jefferson City, Mo., and formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, January 30, 1997, at his home after an extended illness. DUNFORD, Guy C., 72, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Thursday, January 30, 1997, at his residence. He was a retired truck driver and farmer. He was preceded in death by his father, George Guy Dunford; a son, Jimmy N. Dunford; and a brother, G. Paul Dunford. He is survived by his wife, June C. Dunford of Max Meadows; daughter, Carol D. GILLENWATER, Dorothy Henderson, (``Dot''), 79, of Saltville, died Friday, January 31, 1997, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. Mrs. Gillenwater was a member of the Saltville Baptist Church, a member of the Saltville Chapter #151 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a funeral director, as well as one of the owners and operators of The D. R. Henderson Funeral Home, and was also a past secretary of the Southwest Funeral Directors Association for many years, and held a membership with the National Funeral Directors Association and the National Selected Morticians. Mrs. Gillenwater was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Roby P. Gillenwater. Survivors are one daughter, Whitley Gillenwater Cardwell, Saltville; two granddaughters, Rachel and Sarah Cardwell; one sister, Mrs. Mark (Sally Irene) Farris, Abingdon; several nieces and nephews. GILMORE, Ralph Davis, 64, of Salem, passed away Thursday, January 30, 1997. He was a native of Salem and was an Army veteran. He is survived by brothers, Richard E. Gilmore, Salem, William A. Gilmore, Salem, Doug A. Gilmore, Christiansburg, Eddie J. Gilmore, Christiansburg; sisters, Dorothy G. East, Salem, Nancy G. Jones, Christiansburg. HALL, Icealius Alvin, 85, formerly of Hopewell, died Thursday, January 30, 1997, in Nansemond Pointe Nu rsing Home, Suffolk. He was born in Canton, N.C., the son of the late Audi Barter and Athaline Worley Hall and the widow of, Mary Frances Hall. Mr. Hall was a retired Special Agent for the FBI, and was a former member of the Special Agent FBI Association. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Andrew and Kathryn Hall of Suffolk, and Dr. Alvin Leroy and Mary Frances Hall of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandchildren, James Alvin Hall of Madison, Wis., William Icealius Hall of Oneonta, N.Y., and Joseph Balok of Elon College, N.C.; two nieces, Shirley Fratarcangelo of Hopewell and Carolyn H. HAMMERSLEY, Margaret Anne Boone , 66, of Roanoke, passed away at her home Friday, January 31, 1997. She was the daughter of the late John Andrew Boone and Viola Boone Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. E. Howard Hammersley Jr. She is survived by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Simmons of Richmond and Floyd; six children, Elizabeth Barber of Salem, Robert Hammersley of Wilmington, N.C., Karen Hammersley of Norfolk, Chuck Hammersley of Presque Isle, Maine, Jim Hammersley of Orlando, Fla., Lisa Hammersley Reynolds of Richmond; and nine grandchildren. She was a devoted patron of the arts and the development of downtown Roanoke, a loving mother and dear friend. The family will receive friends at her home on Cambridge Avenue. HENLEY, Martha Grimes, 92, of Hillsville, passed away Friday, January 31, 1997, in Radford Community Hospital. She was born January 21, 1905 in Carroll County. KILLINGER, Bernic e Ritchey, 80, wife of the late ``Bill'' Killinger, and daughter of the late Rev. Ernest Ritchey of Marion, died Thursday, January 30, 1997, at her daughter's home in Indian Trail, N.C. Bernice was an active founding member of the Wilderness Road Garden Club. Her dedicated efforts to make a Nature Trail along the Middle Fork of the Holston River have been carried on by numerous Girl and Boy Scouts, Job Corp students, and the Town of Marion. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca ``Becky'' Killinger Gillis and husband, Randy, of Indian Trail, N.C.; two granddaughters, Bryna Suzette Allen of Dallas, Texas, and Wendy Michelle Allen of Boulder, Colo; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Lambert and husband of Roanoke, and Mrs. Inez Barker of Ocala, Fla.; brother, Commander Glen Ritchey and wife of Bremerton, Wash.; brother-in-law, Dr. George P. Killinger and wife of Marion; eleven nephews and two nieces. A memorial service will be held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Marion on May 10, and later a sprinkling of her ashes over her husband's grave at Round Hill Cemetery. KING, Thomas Clarence, 92, of 415 S. Jefferson Ave., Pulaski, died Friday morning, January 31, 1997, in the Pulaski Health Care Center. Born August 4, 1904, in Wythe County, he was the son of the late Mary Mabe King and Smith King. Mr. King worked f or many years at the Virginia Maid Hosiery Mill, and was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Grubb King. He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Ann King of Pulaski, Mrs. Thomas ``Cheryl'' Underwood of Draper; three sons, Robert ``Bob'' King of Pulaski, Frederick Wayne King of Fredericksburg, and John Thomas King of Roanoke; one sister, Marie King of Pulaski; seven grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the mausoleum of Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Rev. Kim Goddard will officiate. LAWRIE, Mary Eaton, 80, of 801 Piedmont Avenue, Bristol, Va., died Thursday, January 30, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of Esther Woodman Eaton and Elon Howard Eaton, born June 4, 1916 in Geneva, New York and lived in Sergeantsville, N.J. before moving to Abingdon in 1967, then to Bristol seven years ago. She was of the Christian Faith, attended Roberts Beach School, graduated from William Smith College in Geneva, New York in 1938. She was a volunteer and former officer with the American Red Cross, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Chiswell Chapter and was the widow of Archer Lawrie. Surviving are three sons, Peter Eaton Lawrie, Bristol, Willis Patten Lawrie, Hardy, and James Woodman Lawrie, Marion; one sister, Elizabeth Eaton White, Geneva, N.Y.; two brothers, Dr. Stephen W. Eaton, Alleghany, New York, and Elon Howard Eaton Jr., Olmsted Falls, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Lawrie, and Bonnie Anne Lawrie, both of Hardy. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Esther Anne Lawrie. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Eaton Lawrie will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alban Crutchfield officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will serve as pallbearers. Woolwine and his wife, Shirley, Richard Woolwine and his wife, Karen, Larry Woolwine and his wife, Betty; two daughters, Becky Warren and Joyce Wall; also eight grandchildren, Robert G. Woolwine, Jason M. Woolwine, Pam Warren, Jennifer Woolwine, Matthew B. Woolwine, Melinda McPeak, Darrell Warren Jr., and Richard A. Woolwine; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher King and Kimberly King. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 3, 1997, at 10 a.m. at New Hope Presbyterian Church with Rev. Keith Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.
