WYTHEVILLE - Plans are under way for the sixth Family History Institute of Southwest Virginia, to be held April 26 at the Wytheville Holiday Inn.

The daylong session will emphasize German research.

Dorothy Boyd-Rush will present a program on German research in the Valley of Virginia and on using newspapers for genealogical searches. Bev Repass Hoch will provide insights into German and Swiss emigration. Mary B. Kegley will discuss German research in Southwest Virginia.

Other sessions include "Genealogy: What You Always Wanted to Ask," a banquet speech on Sarah Herbert of Bristol, England, and life at the lead mines on the Virginia frontier from 1763 to 1783.

Space will be limited, so advance registration is required. Registration forms and other information are available by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the Family History Institute of Southwest Virginia, P.O. Box 134, Wytheville 24382.

Historian's book offers research aid

WYTHEVILLE - A book on "Abstracts of the Court Orders of Wythe County, Virginia, 1811-1820" has been completed by Wytheville author, researcher and lawyer Mary B. Kegley.

The abstracts from these periods also cover what is now the western part of Pulaski County, eastern Smyth County and all of Bland County.

These records open new channels for family and historical research. There are references to the War of 1812 and appointments of militia members, court justices, and the administrators, executors and appraisers of estates. Genealogical material includes lists of heirs certified to the court upon the death of the head of the household.

Information on ordering the book is available by writing Kegley at P.O. Box 134, Wytheville 24382.
