LIBERTY BOMBS FRANKLIN COUNTY

Liberty won for the third time this week Saturday as the state's top-ranked Group AA team used 3-pointers and free throws to defeat Franklin County in a non-district game in Rocky Mount.

The Minutemen (15-1) hit seven 3-pointers in the game and were 19-of-23 from the charity stripe. Liberty did most of its damage in the first three quarters and took a 63-48 lead into the final eight minutes.

Cheyney Preston scored 19 points and Raymond Arrington added 18 for Liberty.

Franklin County (4-14), which shot 50 percent (30-60) from the field, placed four players in double figures. Henry Eggleston and Bobby Basham each had 16 points for the Eagles.

In other games:

Radford 68, Auburn 55: John Robertson scored 23 points and hit seven 3-pointers to lead the Bobcats to a Three Rivers District victory in Riner.

Radford (9-5, 4-2) started out hot, grabbing a 17-7 lead at the end of the first period. The Bobcats maintained a10-point advantage at the half, and increased the margin to 53-40 at the end of the third period.

The Eagles (3-13, 1-6) attempted a fourth-quarter comeback, but Robertson sealed Radford's victory with consecutive 3-pointers.

Brian Smith added 11 points and Tony Hash 10 for the Bobcats. Adam Loveday led Auburn with 17 points, while Ryan Nolen added 11.

Grayson County 84, Fort Chiswell 72: Chad McMillian and Brandon Smith scored 20 of Grayson County's first 41 points to lead the Blue Devils to a Mountain Empire District win at Fort Chiswell.

McMillian finished with 23 points, Wes Self had 18, Travis Archer 17 and Smith 12 for Grayson County (11-4, 5-1), which led 41-28 at halftime.

The Blue Devils held the advantage at the free-throw line, where they made 31 of 36 shots. Fort Chiswell (7-8, 3-4) was 15-for-34 at the stripe.

Heath Bralley scored 20 for the Pioneers, Ritchie Nester added 16 and Derrick Jackson 10.

Bland 74, Narrows 62: The Rockets used a balanced attack to defeat the Green Wave in a Mountain Empire District battle in Bland.

Bland (12-3, 6-1) placed four players in double figures, led by Heath Puckett's 16 points. Lee Meadows added 11 for the Rockets, while John Thompson and Jason Hancock each had 10.

Narrows (7-7, 3-3) was paced by Joe Shipbaugh's 22 points. Jason Mullins and Heath Fleeman each scored 15 for the Green Wave.

Highland 95, Harman (W.Va.) 79: Josh Purdue scored 16 points and hit four 3-pointers in the first period to spark the Blue Devils to a non-district victory at Harman, W.Va.

Purdue, who finished with 19 points, helped lead Highland to a 36-22 lead after one period. The Blue Devils (12-2), ranked eighth in Group A, placed four players in double figures.

Bryan Werner led Highland with 21 points, while Jacob Hull scored 20 points and dished out 17 assists.

Craig Currence and Kelly Bennett each scored 18 for Harman.

Carlisle 74, Timberlake Christian 59: Marty Stanley poured in a career-high 32 points to lead the Chiefs to the Virginia Independent Conference win in Lynchburg.

In the second period Carlisle (8-6, 6-4) held Timberlake Christian without a field goal and outscored the hosts 22-5 to take a 40-20 lead at the break.

Paul Fitzgerald paced Timberlake Christian (3-12, 1-3) with 26 points.

Covington Boys' Home 61, Greater Beckley Christian Academy (W.Va) 50: Chris Hampton and Mike White combined for 42 points and helped Covington overcome a poor shooting start to win a non-district contest.

Hampton, who finished with 22 points, scored 11 of Covington's 21 in the fourth quarter. White scored 20 points and grabbed a team-high 16 rebounds for Covington (8-8).

Billy McGraw scored 17 points for Greater Beckley (8-7), which mustered just nine points in the final quarter.

Girls

Pulaski County 45, Albemarle 42: The Cougars, who were coming off Friday night's big win over Cave Spring, struggled but came away with a non-district win at Charlottesville.

Pulaski County (14-1) scored the game's first nine points, then ran out of gas as Albemarle used a 14-2 run to go ahead. The Patriots led by as many as seven points in the first half.

Robyn Bower led the Cougars' comeback by scoring 14 points. Trina Williams and Sarah Donald added 10.

Jess Evers scored 14 for Albemarle.

Friday's games

George Wythe 60, PH-Glade Spring 34: The Maroons outscored the Rebels 26-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a Hogoheegee District victory in Glade Spring.

Brian Barnes led GW (11-3, 6-1) with 23 points.

PH-Glade Spring is 5-9, 3-3.

Grundy 73, Carroll County 51: Michael Clevenger had 20 points to lead four Golden Wave scorers in double figures as Grundy defeated the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game in Grundy.

The Golden Wave (7-8, 3-3), which led by seven at the half, pulled away in the second half by outscoring Carroll County 44-29. Mike Ellswick added 16 points for Grundy.

Travis Harvey led Carroll County (5-10, 2-2) with 15 points.
