Children at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School in Blacksburg collected
702 cans of soup for the "souper bowl" challenge that they sponsored.
The incorrect number was listed in Tuesday's Class Notes column.

KIPPS IS KING OF CANS IN 'SOUPER' CONTEST

It was a "souper" battle among three Blacksburg schools. The "souper bowl" challenged children at Harding Avenue, Gilbert Linkous and Kipps elementary schools to donate at least two cans of soup to the Interfaith Food Pantry. The challenge was in honor of the National Football League's Super Bowl. Originally it was to take place a week before the big game, Jan. 13-24. However, the challenge was extended until Jan. 31 because of all the weather-related school closings.

The results were: Kipps with more than 1,000 cans; Gilbert Linkous with 202 and Harding Avenue with 275. But the real winner was the Interfaith Food Pantry at Blacksburg Baptist Church, which received more than 2,000 cans of soup. Gilbert Linkous, which organized the bowl, started the program last year and expects to continue the tradition each year.
