Bill Roth, voice of Virginia Tech sports, has been selected Sportscaster of the Year in the state of Virginia for the second year in a row.
Roth, who has been at Tech nine years, will join other state and national winners and Hall of Fame inductees at the 38th Sportscasters and Sportswriters Awards Program in Salisbury, N.C., April 26-28.
Joining Roth as an honoree from Virginia will be Jim Ducibella, of The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, who was selected as the state's Sportswriter of the Year. Ducibella also won last year.
In other sports in the region:
* University of Virginia soccer players Brian West and Angela Hucles have been chosen to the national all-freshman teams by Soccer America.
West, a forward, was fourth in scoring for the UVa men this season with five goals and 12 assists. Hucles, a forward, led the women's team in scoring with 17 goals.
The Virginia men's team was 16-3-3 and finished No. 3 in the final Soccer America poll. The UVa women were 12-7-2 and were ranked No. 10.
