CARLISLE RUNS PAST RVC

Chad Martin paced five players in double figures Tuesday as Carlisle, the defending state champion, knocked off top-ranked Roanoke Valley Christian 100-79 in a key Virginia Independent Conference matchup in Martinsville.

The Chiefs (9-6 overall, 7-4 VIC) exploded in the second quarter to outscore the Eagles 28-12 in the period and take a 46-33 halftime lead. Carlisle remained hot in the third quarter, grabbing a commanding 75-49 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Martin, who connected on four 3-pointers, scored 26 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Chiefs. Lamar Franklin added 21 points, while Marty Stanley had 18, Brandon Page 12 and Philip Dalton 10.

Brad Hutchins scored 31 points for RVC (12-5, 8-3), which came into the game ranked atop the VIS Division 2 poll. Chris Huffman added 18 points and Mark DeLong 13 for the Eagles.

In other games:

Salem 72, Alleghany 59: The Spartans' early long-range bombs buried the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Low Moor.

Salem (11-6, 9-2), which remained tied with William Byrd atop the district standings, nailed four 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes to take an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Andy Beach had a pair of 3s for the Spartans, who hit six 3-pointers in the game.

Alleghany's Casey Burks tried to keep pace, hitting five 3-point baskets and scoring 22 points.

But the Spartans, who were led by Kwam Lewis' 23 points, had too much depth and balance for the Mountaineers (3-12, 3-7).

Giles 70, Radford 65: The Spartans shot 63 percent from the floor and Ben Brown scored 29 points as Giles won a Three Rivers District game in Pearisburg.

Radford (9-6, 4-3) opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take a 37-33 lead. Giles (9-8, 4-3), which shot 72.2 percent in the first half (13-for-18), came back with more torrid shooting and finished 25-for-40 in the game.

After regaining the lead, the Spartans made 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter. Robbie Claytor, who scored 14 points, made six free throws. Aaron Albert scored 13 for Giles.

John Robertson led the Bobcats with 23 points, Tony Hash added 15 and Andrew Crowder 11.

Northside 67, Blacksburg 57: Xavier Lee scored 13 of his 15 points in the third quarter to spark the Vikings (5-12, 5-5) past the Indians (7-9, 4-6) in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Blacksburg.

The Indians owned a 31-26 halftime lead, but pressure defense and quickness turned the game around in the third quarter as the Vikings outscored them 27-12. James Bandy and Daryl Holmes contributed 15 and 14 points respectively.

Philip Klaus led the Indians with 31 points.

Lord Botetourt 58, Rockbridge County 53: The Cavaliers dominated on the boards during a Blue Ridge District victory in Daleville.

Jason Hunt scored 10 points, blocked five shots and pulled down 13 rebounds for Lord Botetourt (10-6, 5-6), which outrebounded the Wildcats 44-28. John Osbourne led Lord Botetourt with 15 points.

Jack Patterson, who collected 12 rebounds to go along with his 14 points, hit a couple of key free throws down the stretch to help seal the Cavaliers' win.

James Hines paced Rockbridge County (3-12, 3-7) with 14 points, while Ricky Wright added 11.

Highland 66, Covington 61: Jacob Hull scored 24 points in the Rams' tight Pioneer District victory over the Cougars in Monterey.

Bryan Werner added 17 points and Josh Perdue 12 for Highland (13-2, 4-2).

Erwin Twitty led Covington (5-10, 2-4) with 25 points.

Heritage 66, Staunton River 48: In Lynchburg, Kevin Lambert hit three 3-point shots on his way to a game-high 17 points as the Pioneers (15-3, 7-2) took an easy Seminole District victory.

Steve Martin led the Golden Eagles (6-12, 3-7) with 10 points.

Glenvar 65, Shawsville 32: The Highlanders forced 14 of the visiting Shawnees' 23 turnovers in the first half on their way to an easy Three Rivers District victory.

Josh Williamson led Glenvar (8-10, 5-2) with 24 points, Donnie Wimmer added 15 and sophomore Seth Noonkester, playing his first game in seven weeks since fracturing his pelvis, scored 10 points and added seven rebounds.

Shawsville (1-15, 0-7) was paced by Linden Ryan's 12 points.

George Wythe 69, John Battle 47: Brian Barnes scored 23 points to lead the Maroons to a Hogoheegee District Victory in Wytheville.

George Wythe (13-3, 8-1) trailed 12-11 after one period. The Maroons, who led by seven at the break, outscored John Battle 39-24 in the second half to put the game away.

Bryan Jones added 14 points for George Wythe. John Taylor led John Battle (4-12, 3-5) with 12 points, while Scott Collins added 10.

Laurel Park 46, Bassett 39: Sophomore forward Ryan Hairston scored a career-high 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Lancers (11-5, 3-4) to a Piedmont District victory in Martinsville.

Andre Fuller scored 12 points and Corie Manns added 11 for Bassett (5-12, 2-5).

Grayson County 80, Pocahontas 72: Travis Archer scored 22 points to pace four Blue Devils in double figures as Grayson County coasted past the Indians in a Mountain Empire District game in Independence.

Derek Phipps and Wes Self added 17 points apiece and Chad McMillian 11 for Grayson County (12-4, 6-1).

Archer also pulled down 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who were up 62-39 after three quarters and played their reserves in the fourth, when the Indians scored 33 points.

David Murphy paced Pocahontas (1-12, 1-8) with 22 points, while Jason Crist added 14 and Barry Thompson 13.

Narrows 70, Rocky Gap 60: Dave Turner scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter, as the Green Wave won a Mountain Empire District game at Rocky Gap.

Jason Mullins scored 15 for Narrows (8-8, 4-5) and Jeff Bowers added 10. Matthew Akers scored 24 for Rocky Gap (4-13, 2-8), Kenny Shrader had 11 and Adam Akers 10.

Graham 68, Carroll County 54: Jeff Lynch scored 21 points and Jason Hypes added 19 points as the G-Men outlasted the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game in Hillsville.

Rusty Rose added 14 points for Graham (16-1, 7-0).

Jody Edwards paced Carroll County (5-11, 2-3) with 14 points, while Scott Goins added 13 and Jerry Holdaway 10.

Floyd County 84, Auburn 67: Travis Cantrell scored a game-high 25 points, including the 1,000th of his three-year varsity career, as the Buffaloes stayed unbeaten with a Three Rivers District win in Riner.

Cantrell eclipsed the 1,000 mark with a 3-point goal at 6:32 of the first quarter.

Floyd County (18-0, 8-0) held a 16-point halftime lead and put it away with a 24-14 run in the third.

Adam Harris scored 16 points and Jason Dalton 15 for the Buffaloes. Josh Vaughn led Auburn (4-14, 1-7) with 15 points, Phil Morris had 11 and Jason Phipps 10.

Liberty 80, Appomattox County 49: Raymond Arrington scored 18 points as the Minutemen raced out to a 47-27 lead at the half and turned back the Raiders in a Seminole District game.

Robert Carson chipped in 13 points and Jonathan Pankey added 12 for Liberty (17-1, 10-0).

Lindsay Fleshman and Kelvin Roebuck scored 12 apiece for Appomattox County.

Martinsville 81, Patrick County 62: Leander Preston had 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs won a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.

Preston finished with a game-high 32 points and Martinsville (11-6, 6-1) held Timesland's leading scorer, Corey Reynolds to 17 points, more than 13 under his average.

Reynolds led Patrick County (6-10, 1-6) in scoring. The Cougars made only 10 of 21 free throws.

Martinsville got 17 points from Manti Venable and 14 from Kelsey Green.

Bland 43, Galax 41: Lee Meadows scored 18 points as the visiting Rockets took over the lead in the Mountain Empire District.

The win for Bland (13-3, 8-1) was not secure until Nate Noel's 3-point attempt missed with less than 10 seconds left.

Noel led Galax (10-7, 7-2) with 11 points. The Maroon Tide went 3-for-21 from 3-point range.

James River 98, Craig County 68: Travis Blankenship scored 10 of his 23 points in the third quarter as the Knights downed the Rockets in a Pioneer District game in New Castle.

Tommy Blankenship added 21 points, Jay Byers 17, Jimmy Thompson 15 and Joey Ingram 10 for the Knights (6-10, 2-4).

Dwayne Crawford led the Rockets (1-10, 0-6) with 24 points.

Magna Vista 54, Fieldale-Collinsville 41: The Warriors overcame a 9-0 deficit and took control in the second half of a Piedmont District victory in Ridgeway.

Landa Martin had 14 points and Markus Hairston added 10 for Magna Vista (13-3, 7-0).

Fieldale-Collinsville (6-11, 2-5) got a game-high 15 points from Joey Taylor.

Rainelle Christian 69, Covington Boys' Home 57: Brent Crookshanks scored 20 points to lead Rainelle Christian past the Indians (8-9) in a non-district affair in Covington.

Covington Boys' Home was led by Mike White with 13 points.

Holston 83, Rural Retreat 65: Jeremy DeBusk scored 32 points during the Cavaliers Hogoheegee District victory over the Indians in Damascus.

Kenny Mullins added 15 points for the Cavaliers. Holston (5-11, 4-4) outscored Rural Retreat (1-11, 1-6) 54-28 in the second and third quarters.

Todd Ridgeway led the Indians with 19 points.

Girls

Roanoke Valley Christian 61, Roanoke Catholic 28: Rebecca Bryant scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles in a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Celtics.

Gina Guthrie added 10 points and 13 steals and Nia Douglas also had 10 points for the Eagles (18-4, 10-1).

Whitney Cummings led the Celtics (4-14, 3-10) with 13 points.

North Cross 49, Carlisle 17: At North Cross, Michele Hamilton scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Raiders routed the Chiefs in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Ann Ballenger added 13 points and Katherine Kelly scored 11 for North Cross (10-5, 9-3).

Brooke Holyfield scored 11 for Carlisle (3-12, 2-9).
