ATKINS, Mary Kathleen, 67, of Pembroke, died Wednesday morning, February 5, 1997, in a Greensboro, N.C. hospital. Born in Giles County on November 29, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Ed and Nellie Smith Martin. She was the wife of the late Billy Ray Atkins I, and a member of New River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Pembroke. Survivi ng are her son, Billy Ray Atkins II, and daughter-in-law, Becky Burnett Atkins of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 7, 1997, at 2 p.m. in the New River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Pembroke with Bishop Larry Green presiding. Burial will be in the Atkins Cemetery in Newport. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

BECKNER, Mabel H. 83 of Roanoke passed away Wednesday, February 5, 1997. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel.

BOWER, Lucille Huffman, 73, of North Fork Road, Elliston, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 5, 1997. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Levi and Ethel Garman Huffman, a brother and sister-in-law, E. B. and Ida Ronk Huffman, and a brother-in-law, Virgil Bower. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Elmer J. Bower; a son and his wife, Lowell and Betty M. Bower; a daughter and her husband, Eileen and Barry Edwards, all of Elliston; six grandchildren, Patrick and Lisa Bower, Vickie and Steve Proffitt, Jeffrey Bower and his fiancee, Wendy; Amy and Kevin Helm, Paige Bower, Leanna Bower; a stepgranddaughter, Dana Edwards; four great-grandchildren, Jordan and Haden Bower, Reba Helm, Tyler Proffitt; a brother and his wife, Leonard and Elsie Mae Huffman; sister and her husband, Estelle and Norman Ronk, brother-in-law and his wife, Paul and Sevilla Bower; sister-in-law, Ruby Bower; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 1997 from Peters Creek Old German Baptist Church. Elders Robert Peters, Darrell Bower and Dan Sowers will officiate. Interment will follow in Peters Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 2 p.m. Thursday, and after 2 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel.

BRINEGAR, Talmadge L., 80, of Independence, passed away Wednesday, February 5,1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Firday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel.

CALDWELL, Jessie F., 86, formerly of Sunset Ave., Salem, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 1997 in a Salem health care center. She was the widow of Robert L. Caldwell and was a retired secretary from the Conehurst Elementary School, Salem. Mrs. Caldwell was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Rose L. and Jack Ga rst, Roanoke, Joan C. and James E. Kincaid, Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Patti G. Neikirk, Roanoke, Cindee G. Newman, Roanoke, Jeffrey E. Kincaid, Lynchburg, R. Keith Kincaid, Lynchburg; nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Friday, February 7, 1997 in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. DILLOW, Roxanna Caldwell, (``Nancy""), 74, of Blacksburg, died Monday, February 3, 1997, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. EARLY, Frank Shelvin, 67, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Montgomery County to the late Frank C. and Gertie Akers Early. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #9898, Blacksburg, the Republican Party, and the Riverview Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Andree Raymonde Early. Surviving are one sister, Doris Mildred East, Ft. Myers, Fla.; two foster children, John and Cindy Akers, Blacksburg; one aunt, Hazel Oliver, Christiansburg; two cousins, Reba Meredith, Christiansburg, W. B. Akers, Blacksburg, and many more cousins; one niece, Judy Early, Ft. Myers, Fla.; two special friends, Ruby A. Dove and Nadine F. Allen, both of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 8, 1997, 1 p.m., at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ellis Meredith officiating. EAST, James Douglas, 54, of Christiansburg, died at his home early Wednesday, February 5, 1997. He is survived by one son, Kevin E. East, Vinton; one brother, John R. East, Christiansburg; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Richardson-Horne Chapel with Reverend Bobby Fain officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. HOPKINS, Hazel Alline Foster, 75, of Christiansburg, died at her home Wednesday morning, February 5, 1997. She is survived by her husband, James Hopkins; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Susie Foster, Thomas and Linda Foster, and Archie Foster; daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Th omas Price, Mary Ellen Graham; a special stepdaughter and her husband, Sandra and Robert Taylor; one sister, Ida Belle Richards, all of Christiansburg; also 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren. MARSH, Venolia Catron, 88, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at the Edgemont Center. She was the widow of William T. Marsh, and was the daughter of the late William Z. and Flossie Cline Catron. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita M. and David ``Peanut'' Richardson of Wytheville, Elva M. ``Bobbie'' and Joseph L. McAllister of Salem; one sister, Hallie C. Miller of Crockett; one grandchild, Danny Joe and Paula McAllister of Salem; one great-grandchild, Daniel J. McAllister. Funeral services will be Friday, 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Edward Richardson, with the interment in the Berea Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Grubb Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., or at the home of her daughter, Rita Richardson, at any time. MOORE, William David, of Buena Vista, died Monday, February 3, 1997, in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Born August 10, 1969 in Lexington, he was the son of Lewis and Doris McKemy Moore of Buena Vista. He was employed at the Natural Bridge Learning Center. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Virginia Tomlin Moore of Sterling; a son, David Alan Moore of Sterling; a sister, Debbie Leftwich and husband, Rick, and family of Lexington; half brother, Eddie McKemy, Lexington; maternal grandfather, William L. McKemy, Lexington; uncle and aunt, Sam and Faye Moore and family of Buena Vista; uncle, Richard McKemy, Lexington; very special friend, Randy Byers. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 7, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Daniel H. Duff Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. NALLS, Dorothy Cecil, 85 of Salem passed away Tuesday, February 4, 1997. A native of Salem, she was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 30 years. Mrs. Nalls is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank H., Jr. and Julie Nalls, Richmond; daughter and son-in-law, Judy N. and James J. Graham, Ridgeway; grandchildren, Peter, Angela, Brian, Misa and Karli; brothers and sister-in-law, Curtis Cecil, William and Kathy Cecil; sister, Margaret Saunders. NELSON, Elsie McGhee Arnold, 90, of Botetourt Co., died Tuesday, February 4, 1997. She was the widow of William Curry Arnold and Allen B. Nelson. Mrs. Nelson was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin J. McGhee, Carl H. McGhee; sister, Edith M. Epperly; granddaughter, Sharon Wertz Cheatham. She was a member of Daleville Baptist Church and retired from the V.A. Hospital in Salem. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jacques D. and Everlyn S. Arnold, Roanoke, Don M. and Betty M. Arnold, Troutville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Frances A. and Lewis E. Wertz Sr., Roanoke, Phyllis A. and Luther L. Keith, Roanoke, Sandra A. and Roland L. Painter, Hopewell, Sue A. and Martin L. Gibson, Roanoke; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel, 1 p.m. Friday with Dr. Carl Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. PETTIGREW, Edward Thomas Sr., 95, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, February 4, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Richmond on January 27, 1902. He was the son of the late Mary Virginia Queensbury and Archie Pettigrew, and was a retired employee of N & W Railway. He was a member and former treasurer of Roanoke B.P.O.E. (Elks Club). Mr. Pettigrew was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Fielding Pettigrew, and his second wife, Amy Richardson Pettigrew. Surviving are his son, Edward Thomas Pettigrew Jr., Lynchburg; two grandsons, Dean W. Pettigrew, Stanardsville, and Alan Walter and wife, Ann Kendall Reams Pettigrew, Lynchburg; niece Violet W. Pessagno, Hyattsville, Md.; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the graveside, Fairview Cemetery, 11 a.m. Thursday, February 6, 1997, with Rev. Frank W. Feather officiating. He was a me mber of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, and is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Darlette Arlene Shimp; a loving daughter, Alene Carver, Fort Myers, Fla.; two loving sons, David Shimp, Vinton, Jeffrey Shimp, Phoenix, Md.; five loving grandchildren; a loving sister, Hazel Bentz, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a loving brother, Bill Shimp, Jacksonville, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Earlene Webb of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Charlotte Webb, Oviedo, Fla.; sister, Reba Durban, Plain City, Ohio; brother, Marvin Webb, Altamonte Springs, Fla. Carty, Williamsburg; two nieces and spouses, Deborah Carty and John Ashley, Roanoke, Jackie Carty and Ricky Gordon, Williamsburg; one great-niece and spouse, Angela L. and Chuck Satterfield; one great-nephew, Shawn A. Gordon. Ms. Webb was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis Hale and Linnie Sutphin Webb, and also a sister, Loveline W. Carty. WHITE, Karen Hoopes, 47, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday afternoon, February 5, 1997. She was formerly a registered nurse at Community Hospital, and was a loving and devoted mother and wife. Surviving are her husband, Dan White; two daughters, Melissa White, Megan White; her father, Sloan H. Hoopes; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Sandra Hoopes, Robert and Sherry Hoopes; a sister and brot her-in-law, Ann and Rick Calhoon; her mother-in-law, Virginia White, all of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, from Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, with Father Tim Huffman officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

WHITTEN, Florence Yancey, (``Miss Tee''), 76, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, February 3, 1997. She was born in Amherst to the late Olon and Nellie Davis Yancey. ``Miss Tee'' was a retired beautician. She is survived by one brother, James Yancey; one niece, Dorothy Holmes; one niece-in-law, Shirley Glenn, all of Roanoke; one aunt, Mrs. Lucille Davis, Amherst; devoted friends, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Brown, Roanoke; a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, noon, at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Rev. Vater Colbert will officiate. The interment will follow in Williams Memorial Park.
