BLUE DEVILS BEAT BLAND, LEAD MED

Wes Self made two free throws with 2 seconds remaining, sending Grayson County to a 55-53 victory over 10th-ranked Bland on Wednesday at Independence and vaulting the Blue Devils into first place in the Mountain Empire District.

Grayson County (13-4, 7-1) rallied from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter behind point guard Chad McMillian, who scored five straight points to tie the score 51-51 with under 2 minutes to play.

Derrick Phipps made a jumper to give Grayson the lead with 40 seconds left, then Bland's Heath Puckett scored on a rebound with 11 seconds left to tie it at 53.

After a Grayson County timeout, Self, who finished with 11 points, drove to the basket and was fouled. After he made the free throws, Bland (13-4, 7-2), the No. 10 team in Group A, could not get the ball downcourt.

McMillian led Grayson County with 17 points. Puckett led the Rockets with 13 points, John Thompson had 12 and Jeremiah Tate 10.

In other games Wednesday:

Rockbridge County 69, Harrisonburg 66: Rockbridge County's Ricky Wright led four Wildcats in double figures with 20 points, leading Rockbridge County to a 69-66 non-district victory. Jaymie Terrell scored 15, Jonathan Haston 13 and Chad Sensabaugh added 10 in the victory.

Rockbridge County built a 42-29 lead in the third quarter before Harrisonburg went on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 44. The two battled back a forth until the Wildcats surged ahead for good with a late 6-0 run to put the score at 66-60.

After narrowing the score to three, a Harrisonburg desperation 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer

Robby Roadcap paced Harrisonburg with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Bath County 78, Craig County 50: Adam Grist scored 21 of his 30 points in the first half as the Chargers built a 24-point lead and rolled to a Pioneer District victory over the Rockets in New Castle.

Grist hit four 3-pointers for Bath County (10-5, 4-1), which also got 11 points from Eric Neilson. Mike Fisher led Craig County (1-10, 0-7) with 13 points.

Patrick County 57, Carlisle 55: Shawn Smart made a game-winning 3-pointer with 2 seconds left as Patrick County nipped Carlisle in a non-district game in Martinsville.

Smart and teammate Corey Reynolds combined for 32 points, including nine 3-pointers to help the Cougars (7-9) win.

Lamont Franklin led the Chiefs (9-7) with 26 points.

George Wythe 56, Radford 50: Justin Bourne scored 15 points as the Maroons turned back the Bobcats in a non-district matchup in Radford.

Brian Barnes added 12 points and Lance Goff chipped in 11 for George Wythe (14-3), which led from the tipoff.

John Robertson's 16 points paced Radford (9-7) and Andrew Crowder added 13.

Bourne made five of six free throws as George Wythe hit 12 of 15 from the line to ice the game in the final stanza.

Girls

Pulaski County 66, Patrick Henry 17: Sarah Donald's 14 points led three Cougars in double figures in a non-district rout of the homestanding Patriots.

Lisa Skeens and Robin Bower added 10 points each for Pulaski County. Patrick Henry fell to 3-13.

Roanoke Catholic 30, Carlisle 24: Cristy Hinman scored 12 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out five assists as the Celtics (5-15, 4-10) notched a Blue Ridge District victory over Carlisle at Roanoke Catholic.

Whitney Cummings added a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 reboundsfor the Celtics. Catholic forced Carlisle into 22 turnovers.

Brooke Holyfield led the Chiefs (3-13, 2-10) with 11 points.

Tuesday's game

Holy Cross 92, North Cross 50: Peter Miano and Sherman Hughes each had 17 points as Holy Cross used a balanced attack to romp past the Raiders in a VIC in Lynchburg.

Holy Cross (12-7, 7-4), which led 50-21 at the half, placed five players in double figures. Abraham Hughes added 16 points, while Caleb Buchanan scored 14 and John Baumgarner 13.

Jeff Betz scored 11 and Michael Spoeckle 10 for North Cross (5-10, 3-7).
