The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is offering a free videotaping service to help citizens inventory their personal property.
Deputy Jimmy Bowyer said a state grant paid for the video camera the officers use.
The service is meant to help document property in case of fire or theft. Bowyer said he suggests giving the tape to an insurance agent or keeping it in a safety deposit box.
That way, if a fire destroys any of the property, a video record is available to help assess the loss. If police are investigating a theft, the tape will help officers verify if any stolen property recovered matches what the person owned, he said.
Anyone interested in taking advantage of the service should call the Crime Prevention Unit at 382-6914. There is no charge, but Bowyer said if the person can provide a tape that would be helpful; otherwise, the Sheriff's Office can provide the tape, too.
