BECKNER, Mabel Munsey, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 1997. She is survived by two sons, Buford Beckner or Roanoke, Richard Beckner of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Pauline Hoback of Roanoke; and 2 grandsons of Tampa, Fla. BUTLER, Dr. William Wilson Samuel III, 73, of Roanoke, died Thursday, February 6, 1997, in Community Hospital, after a brief illness. He was a founding member of Jefferson Surgical Clinic in Roanoke, where he practiced medicine and surgery, specializing in Urology continously from the year 1955 to the date of his death.. He was born January 21, 1924, son of the late Dr. W.W.S. Butler Jr. and Sarah Caldwell Butler, all of Roanoke. Surviving are his wife, Claire Titus Butler; children and spouses, Mery Claire Butler Little and husband, William G. Little of Lakeland, Fla., Dr. William W. S. Butler IV, and wife, Helen H. Butler of Roanoke, Dr. John Marshall Butler Sr. and wife, Frances L. Butler of Roanoke; and seven grandchildren, Gregory Caldwell Little and Shelby Lenore Little, children of Mery and William G. Little, Elizabeth Claire Butler and Catherine Renee Butler, children of Dr. W. W. S. Butler IV and Helen Butler, John Marshall Butler Jr., Lee Williams Butler, and William W. S. Butler V, children of Dr. John M. Butler Sr. and Frances Butler; brother and sister-in-law, M. Caldwell Butler and June Nolde Butler, Roanoke. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Md., where he received his medical degree in 1947, and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Brady Urologic Institute, Baltimore, Md., where he received his Internship and Residency in Urology. In addition to his academic training, he was an instructor in Urology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from the years 1951 to 1953; and Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine from 1974 to 1981, and Clinical Professor of Urology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine from 1981 to the date of his death. He was Senior Investigator, National Cancer Institute in 1953, and certified by the American Board of Urology in 1958. He served as Chief of Staff, Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley from 1979 to 1982. He also served as Chief of Urology at Community Hospital for a number of years. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Colonel in 1986. He was a member of the American Urological Association, Inc., where he was president of the Mid-Atlantic Section in 1985; member of the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, American Association of Clinical Urologists, where he was President in 1985, and Southern Society of Urologic Surgeons, where he was President in 1983, He was also a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, where he was a Vice-President. He was a member of the Virginia Urological Society, where he was President in 1973. He was a member of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine, where he was president in 1974. He has been a member of the Virginia State Board of Medicine since 1994. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke, and an Eagle Scout of its Troop 17. The family requests that flowers be omitted and suggests that memorials might be sent to the Department of Urology, Research Foundation, Box 422, University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va. 22902. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke, with the Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. DENNIS, Captolia M., 90, of 258 Bartlett Circle, Cleveland, Tenn., formerly of 406 Wickham Avenue, Princeton, W.Va., went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 1997. Born June 18, 1906 at Pearisburg, she was the daughter of the late James and Nancy Munsey Minnick. She was a resident of Princeton for more than 70 years and had lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Jewell Vaught and Dr. Laud Oswald Vaught in Cleveland, Tenn. for the past two years. Mrs. Dennis was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Lee Warren Dennis, who was employed by the Virginian Railroad from 1921 until his retirement in 1969; by her son, Edwin Dennis, also an employee of the Virginian Railroad and a veteran of the Korean Conflict; and by two sisters; and three brothers. She was a member of the Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton. Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Jewell Vaught and Dr. Laud O. Vaught, with whom she made her home; one brother, Frank Minnick of Pearisburg; five grandchildren, Felicia Phillips of Pipestem, Melinda Norton, Denice Wanner, Dwight Vaught, all of Minot, N.D., Laud Lee Vaught of Acworth, Ga.; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 1997, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton, with Reverend David Jasper and Dr. Ray Hurt officiating. DICKSON, Paul S., 73, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, February 6, 1997 in a local hospital. He retired from Castle Steel Company of Chicago. He was a U. S. Marine Veteran of World War II, and was wounded in the South Pacific. Surviving are four brothers, Marlin Dickson, James Dickson, both of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., William Dickson, Danny Dickson, both of Roanoke; two sisters, Dorothy Kaptis, White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., Elizabeth Bradley, New Castle. Funeral services will be at Oakey's North Chapel, 10 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 1997, with the Rev. Frank Feather officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. EVERSOLE, Dartha Nicel y, 66, of Roanoke, died Thursday morning, February 6, 1997. She was the daughter of the late John William Nicely and the late Tinia Brown Nicely. Dot, as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, was born on June 2, 1930, in Iron Gate, Va. She was a member of Westhampton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Roanoke. She is survived by her husband, Robert; three sons, David of Plymouth, N.H., Kerry and his wife, Cindy, of Lanesboro, Minn., Andrew of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Margaret Smith of Eagle Rock, Va., Mary Anderson of Clifton Forge, Va., Joyce Aldridge of Iron Gate, Va.; one brother, William Nicely, Radford, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three half sisters and two half brothers. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Avenue, S. W., Roanoke, Va., at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 1997. Dr. Paul D. Matheny will officiate. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor, Va. FARRAR, Norvell Everett, (""Flea"") 83, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 1997 in a Roanoke hospital. Mr. Farrar was a lifetime member of Melrose Baptist Church. He worked for the Times-World Corporation for 40 years and was the Press Room Superintendent when he retired in 1977. He was preceded in death by his parents, R. Guy and Blanche Handley Farrar; and a brother, Eugene Farrar. Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Blankenship Farrar; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Rebecca Farrar, Martinsville, Jerry and Sherry Farrar, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Lisa Farrar Sarver and husband Scott, Roanoke, Jason Farrar, Charlottesville and his fiancee, Jennifer Colburn, Brad Farrar, Roanoke, and Elizabeth Ann Farrar, Martinsville; two sisters and brother-in-law, Kathryn Farrar and Marguerite and Clark Humphries; sister-in-law, Mamie Farrar, all of Roanoke. HOLCOMB, Nora Brown, 69, of Rocky Mount, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 6, 1997. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Ozz Brown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J. Robert Holcomb and one sister, Elizabeth Cundiff. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Wayne Webb; one special grandson, Cody Webb; a sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Kermit Toler; a special nephew, Wayne Toler; nephew and wife, Buddy and Marie Toler; also surviving are several great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Holcomb was a long time active member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she was active in the WMU, Sunday School and other organizations of the Church. KIRBY, Russell Lee, 78, of 1120 Wilson Avenue, Pulaski, died Wednesday evening, February 5, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Pulaski County on April 11, 1918, and was the son of the late Emmett K. Kirby and Beulah Q. Kirby. He was a retired employee of the N & W Railroad and he was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Pulaski. He was a member of the American Legion Post, Pulaski, the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067, and he was active in the Boy Scouts of America. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Waller Kirby, Pulaski; daughter, Jennifer Kirby Stuart, Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Gail Kirby, Riner; granddaughter and spouse, Susan Kirby Phillips and Cecil C. REED, Virginia Louise, 75, of Peterstown, W. Va., died Thursday, February 6, 1997 at a Princeton, W.Va. hospital. She was born March 31, 1921, at Penvir, Va. and was the daughter of the late William Everett and Minnie Ella Nunn Robertson. She was a homemaker and former employee of Hometown Restaurant in Peterstown, a member of the Peterstown united Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Ellen Ball Circle and the Ladies Bible Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lacy Reed, two brothers and one sister. Surviving are three sons, Danny Reed and his wife Karen of Peterstown, W.
