LONGTIME FIRE CHIEF, COUNTY SUPERVISOR DIES

Henry Arthur Farris, 81, the first fire chief of the Newbern Volunteer Fire Department, died Friday in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Farris served as fire chief for 27 years. He had also served on the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors for 12 years.

Among his other activities over the years were serving as president of the Dublin Lions Club, in which he was a charter member for more than 40 years; president of the Newbern Community Club; board of trustees chairman for Newbern Cemetery; president of the New River Valley Fair Association for 30 years; and president of the Virginia Association of Fairs. He was also a veteran of World War II.

He and his brothers operated three grocery stores and, later, a family dairy business which he managed for 32 years. He retired in 1973.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Radford Church of Christ, with burial in the Newbern Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home starting at 2 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Henry Farris Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 3236, Radford, Va. 24143.
