RED WINGS' BOWMAN GETS 1,000TH WIN

Scotty Bowman needed three tries and Brendan Shanahan's three goals before becoming the first NHL coach to win 1,000 games as Detroit rallied to beat homestanding Pittsburgh 6-5 on Saturday in overtime.

Shanahan grabbed a deflection of Bob Rouse's shot off Penguins defenseman Jason Woolley's stick and jammed it past rookie goaltender Patrick Lalime at 2:01 of overtime for the game-winner.

Mario Lemieux scored his 601st and 602nd career goals and Ron Francis moved into seventh place on the NHL's career assists list, but the Penguins could not hold leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 5-4.

Bowman's 1,000th victory is more than all but seven NHL franchises have achieved - the six pre-expansion teams, plus Philadelphia.

Lemieux, who became only the seventh player in the NHL's 600-goal club with an empty-net score Thursday against Vancouver, quickly added No.601 and 602 as Pittsburgh took a 3-2 lead in the first.

Francis set up Lemieux's first goal for his 927th career assist, moving him past Stan Mikita on the NHL career list.
