NCAA MARK PROVES EASY AS 1-2-3

Grinnell guard Jeff Clement says if you shoot the ball often enough, the ball will go in the basket.

It went in often enough Saturday for Clement to set an NCAA all-division record with 16 3-pointers in 19 minutes of play.

The 5-foot-10 sophomore finished with 50 points in Grinnell's 151-112 victory over Monmouth of Illinois. He was 16-of-26 from beyond the 3-point arc.

``Our system allows the 3-pointer to be thrown up,'' Clement said in a telephone interview from his dorm room. ``I was feeling good today - I just got open and cashed in.

``It hasn't really sunk in yet, but tomorrow I think it will. I'm sort of at the euphoria stage right now.''

The previous Division III record of 14 was shared by two former Grinnell players. Steve Diekmann set it Feb.18, 1994, against Illinois College and matched it Nov.19, 1994, against Simpson. Ed Brands matched it Feb.24, 1996, against Ripon.

Keith Veney of Marshall holds the Division I record of 15, set Dec.14, 1996, against Morehead State. Andy Schmidtmann of Wisconsin-Parkside holds the Division II record of 14, set Feb.14, 1989, against Lakeland.

Clement's previous best was a 35-point performance, including seven 3-pointers, Jan.25 against St.Norbert. Clement said Grinnell's system calls for a shot every 10 seconds.

``We keep throwing it up,'' he said. ``If they go in, someone's going to have a big game.''
