CELEBRATIONS - ANNIVERSARIES

Austin anniversary

Joseph (Joe) and Christine (Chris) Austin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary February 8th. She is the former Christine Arnold and they were married February 8, 1947 at St. Andrew's. Joe served as Supply Officer for the 216th General Hospital in England and Germany and was placed on inactive duty as Major at the end of the war. He was retired from the Computer Department, Norfolk and Western Railroad. Chris was employed at the Veteran's Administration having served as Chief of Accounting, Regional Office, and was retired as Assistant Finance Officer, V.A. Hospital.

Carr anniversary

Clint (Jim) and Elsie Carr celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on January 31, 1997 at their home on Poage Valley Road.

They were united in marriage on January 31, 1947. She is the former Elsie Helen Adams of the Virginia Baptist Children's Home, Salem, VA. He is from Simpson's, VA.

They have two children- Helen Dale Carr Duncan and James Timothy Carr (Tim)- who presented them with three grandchildren- Heather and Hollie Duncan and Tim Carr II.

He retired from General Electric Co. as a Methods, Planning and Times Standard Specialist. She retired from General Electric Co. as Company Nurse.

Cunningham anniversary

Jim and Ruby Cunningham of Smith Mountain Lake celebrated their 50th anniversary on February 8, 1997. They were honored by their children with a family dinner at Charcoal Steak House and a trip to Cedar Key, Florida.

The couple was married on February 8, 1947 in Tazewell, Virginia. Mrs. Cunningham is the former Ruby Blankenship. Their children are Nancy and Roger Cole; and Susan and David Angle, all of Roanoke. They have 5 grandchildren: Jimmy, Tracie, Willie, Matthew, and Erin.

Jim is retired from the USAF and Bendix Corporation. Ruby is retired from Goddard Space Flight Center.

Earhart anniversary

James C. (Jay) & Elmyra C. Earhart celebrated their 55th anniversary on January 31, 1997. The couple was married January 31, 1942 in Wytheville, VA. She's the former Elmyra Callahan of Wytheville. They have three children; Janet, Penny and Tina, and 2 grandchildren.

Johnson anniversary

Joan and Richard Johnson celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on January 30. They were wed in 1946 in Wales, Great Britain, and have resided in Poplar Hill, Va. for nearly 50 years. Of this union, they raised three children: Deanne Brandon, Calif., Rev. Terri Gregory, Tenn., and Linda Johnson, W.Va. Sharing congratulations are family members, Rev. Richard Gregory, Elizabeth Brandon, Catherine Brandon, Eric Rupe, and John Gregory.

Leedy anniversary

Fred and Vada Leedy celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary today. They were married February 9, 1937. They will reaffirm their wedding vows today at the Belspring Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow. Vada is a homemaker and Fred retired in 1981. They have two children and two granddaughters. Happy Anniversary with love from all your family.

Wiseman anniversary

Robert L. (Bob) and Cathern McFaddin Wiseman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on February 9, 1997 at their home. They were married on February 1, 1947 in Lexington, Va. The celebration was hosted by their children and spouses, Wayne, Fred and Debbie, Steven and Debbie, David and Sherry, all of Roanoke; Diane and Preston Franklin of Concord, Va., and Karen and Bobby Huffman of Callaway, Va. They also have 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Worley anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Donald J. Worley celebrated their 50th anniversary on February 1, 1997. The celebration was held at Sunnybrook Inn and was hosted by their daughters, Mrs. Donald Taylor (Donna), and Mrs. Larry Sailer (Betty). The couple was married February 3, 1947 in Belair, Md. They have lived in Roanoke for the last 37 years. Their children are Donna Taylor of Vinton, Cdr. Bruce E. Worley of Oak Harbor, Wash., Capt. Allen B. Worley of Virginia Beach, Roger L. Worley of Duluth, Ga., and Betty Sailer of Vinton. They have eleven grandchildren.

Mrs. Worley is the former Bonnie Boyles, and is retired from Eli Lilly Corp. Mr. Worley is retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital. They are members of Vinton Church of the Brethren, Roanoke Masonic Lodge, Roanoke Valley Amateur Radio Club, and Vinton Moose Lodge.

Out of town guests attending the celebration were Mrs. Allen B. Worley (Betty) and three children, Rachel, Katie, and Aaron from Virginia Beach.

A reception is planned for August with the return of son, Capt. Allen B. Worley, from command duty in Diego Garcia.

The couple plan to visit their son, Cdr. Bruce E. Worley and his family in Oak Harbor this June.
